Recently purchased a 2000 z24 from a former local .org member. Got the car for 1,500, but it has a “knock”. How hard is it to replace the motor, and where would I look to purchase one? I’m new to this platform, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
i think if you replace the HVAC knobs, it should take care of the knock
Its easy enough, if you replace them with clear ones, you atleast get some weigh reduction out of the ordeal.
Changing the engine to another like engine of the same year is no more difficult than most front drivers. Changing to a dissimilar engine varies from "messy" to "very difficult". There are lots of threads in the Performance and Third Gen forums on engine changes. If you wanted another like engine, you'd look in the usual places like junkyards, eBay and/or other on-line vendors. Good used, low milage engines (2.4's) are getting scarce. Remanufactured engines are available, but they're not cheap either. You can even still get a new Goodwrench engine from a dealer or on-line vendor (for a lot more than the car is likely worth). It all depends on the direction you want to take. Good luck. - Mark
If you dont know what youre doing, you shouldn't have bought a car with a bad motor...

Poor guy is asking a question, and he gets scarcasim.........
To answer his question,
Some get a low mileage engine from a junk yard, or get one rebuilt through an engine shop and beef it up a little.
good luck

It is not hard really. Should be able to be done in one day. Hard part is finding a low mileage 2.4 is a little more diffcult. Last few we got for people were $800-$1000, but had 6 month warranties.

Honestly, With the prices I am seeing these engines go for, I would look into rebuilding it.
