2003 throttle problem - kind of dangerous...

2003 Sunfire (Ecotec)

My car's throttle is racing on it's own while driving. I'll be idling or crusing at like 30mph, and then all of a sudden i notice the car accelerating on its own. If i click the car into neutral, the RPM's race up to 3000-4000. It goes away after a few minutes... but i usually end up turning the ignition off and back on while in Neutral to make it stop racing.

Any idea what this could be? I was thinking TPS but nothing's throwing a code. BTW, it's not the floormat, i removed it to make sure i wasn't going crazy.

thanks...

Do you have an intake? If so check and see if the throttle is getting cough on it. I have
a 2003 cavalier and my throttle was getting stuck on the intake so I shaved down the plastic
to make the extra room. just a thought.

sounds to me you got a binding throttle cable, or could be its failing part.

Good Luck.

Unplug ththrottle position sensor and see if RPM goes back to normal range. This won't hurt your car, just give a slight lag in throttle response. If RPM goes back to normal then change TPS. Same problem with my 2002 2.4. Good Luck

Check IAC and ice on the throttle body, sounds silly but happened to me couple winters ago and mine was stuck wide open with a huge chunk of condensated ice holding it open.
