Ok so about three months ago I bought a 2001 Cav z24 and was hoping to learn a bit about cars by working on it. But recently it just blew up on me and when I had it looked at the shop said it had blown bearings and it needs a new engine or a rebuild. So I was wondering what I should do, it seems I have a few options but don't know how much each of them should cost and was looking for some help on that. I want to either get it rebuilt, swap in an Ecotec, or swap in a 3800. But like I said I'm pretty much a noob so I still dont know much and I need to know what might be the best way to go out of these 3 or if anybody has a suggestion that might be better than these three I'm open for any advice. I guess it would depend on what you're looking to do with the car... It is easiest to determine your budget and decide what you want to use the car for first

Well I want to use the car to learn on and work on to get better performance so I can learn a bit about cars, past petty things like changing oil and other things any person can do. I have about 3k now to put into it but I can probably go to 4k if completely necessary but would prefer to stay in the 3's.
I'd stick with a 2.4, really. For $3-4000 You can build a pretty decent LD9 and have money left over for boost...

i would do a 3x00 or eco swap because its a 2001 eather one

since your new to cars a 3X00 swap should not even be on your radar, theres too much involved i would say stay with a 2.4 until your use to car enough then maybe sell the 2.4 and go from there you can get decent money for a running 2.4 motor just because its not very common to find a 2.4 that runs
2000 Eco swaps aren't too bad either

Im on my second motor. Since i was on a thight budget I decided to get a motor from the junkjard. It all depends on you. How much are you willing to spend. A used 2.4 should run you around 900 bucks. Also check ebay they sell rebuild motors for i think 2,000
Eco swap it. Finding go fast parts for the ecotec is alot easier than the 2.4. Plus you dont have to worry about that pesky #3 bearing.

I've always had an issue with the #3 bearing. Im on my third motor now. First motor had a rod knock due to a spun bearing (#3 ofcourse) at 60k miles (bob bell chevy fixed that under warranty). Then, 7k miles later it happened again (#3 bearing) and bob bell chevy fixed it again for free cuz one of the service writers informed me that the motor that was replaced the first time was a crappy reconditioned block (which she should have never told me). So now I have a fresh GM goodwrench remanufactured 2.4L that I wont beat the crap out of until I have the money to fund an eco swap. 2.4L FTL
