i thought i read that on wikipedia that it was noted that LD9's usually develop rod knock when the motor goes over the 100K mile area. how common does this happen? im thinking about picking up a 2nd car for a DD commuter for a cheap price but i dont want to go through the hassle of getting one from a private seller or dealer then get the rod knock on the LD9 and then pay the money to get it repaired.
There's no default rule that says the LD9 will develop a rod knock at 100K. They do have a greater propensity for it over the 2.3's they replaced, if they're consistently flogged, because they have a longer stroke, narrower rod journals and a lower red line that unfortunately some people igor. That being said, I know of a half-dozen to a dozen LD9's with between 100K and 200K (and one over 200K) that have been and are still running trouble free. If the engine has been maintained and not beaten to death, it's should have good longevity. If you plan to modify it, it's important that you consider the bottom end in your modifications and not just do cams, intake, and exhaust as some do. Just my opinion. Your method may vary. - Mark

I had 190,000 miles on my LD9, boosted, raced. Ran perfect, never any problems. The only reason it was swapped was for a built LD9.
2001 Olds Alero (LD9)

@turboalero
change the oil every 3k and be good to it and i think an ld9 could last upwards of around 300k.
Needing 2.3 oil pump stuff? PM me...
140,000 miles on mine runs great

good to know, thanks guys.
Not meaning to thread jack, but since we're still dealing with high mileage LD9's, you high mileage guys go that far on the original water pumps? (Apology in advance if it's not appropriate to ask in this thread.) - Mark
148500, boosted since 110000. I beat the snot out of it. Original WP. Dyno oil every 3000. Head has never been off the car. i love this ld9.

I had a grand am that made it to 99,9xx miles and then boom rod knock then spun a bearing/rod snapped and hole in the block. (Oil chaned every 5kmile. Only highway)
My buddies 96 Z24 with 173k on it just spun a bearing last week! We are currently rebuilding the motor (Unknown history up to 130k but from 130-170k it was raced every weekend and oil chaned 2x a month)
but as stated before there are way to many factors involved in guessing when the engine will develope knock. If you do run into problems there are ALOT of people on this site that will help you out!
