Horn button wiring - how?

1997 sunfire convt.


I had to change the headlight/turn signal stalk because my headlights wouldn't work due to the switch for low/high beams failing.

I took off the airbag/horn button to do this, and when I was putting it back in, the horn button wires don't make sense to me.


It's a pair of red wires coming from the two horn switches in the airbag cover, which go through a white collar, spring, to the contact. The white collar can compress the spring. The white collar has two nubs on it, one at the top end and one at the bottom, 180 degrees opposite.

So, I can place the red wire in the wheel, but I can't seem to turn the white collar so that the nubs lock it in. This means that the wires just sort of float in there and there's no spring tension on that spring that should force the contact to, well, make contact. I have no idea how it's really supposed to be.

Can someone tell me how it really should be? Does someone have the relevant pages of alldata or Helms shop manuals?

why did you remove that stuff to change that. all you should have to do is push it in and turn if it doesn't stay in you broke the clips and will need to go see your dealer for the replacement kit

Thanks for writing back.

I took the wheel off because it was the only way to get the headlight stalk and switch assembly off for replacement when it failed. I prefer to have headlights.

When I took the horn button/airbag out, the red wires for the horn fell out at me - I didn't turn or pull.

Based on your response, I took the wheel off again.

The white plastic collar is fine. The black socket that it is supposed to push-turn into in order to lock is broken. I can only guess that the former owner of the car or someone he had work on the car in the past broke it. I don't have the broken piece or I would superglue it.

Is there a replacement black socket for this? It looks like it's part of the Coil ASM assembly that is circlip'd to the column.

My current plan of action is to take a lock washer, cut the split out a little bit more, and then epoxy it in that hole so that I have the keyhole for the white collar to push in and turn against.
