What is an equivalent fluid for GM's Syncromesh
Sunday, February 15, 2009 5:06 PM
There has to be SOMETHING out there that is equal or better than the GM Synchromesh, anyone have any ideas? What kind of weight does the Syncromesh have, like 75w50 or something? Can we use a synthetic with an equal weight? Mine is probably a good 1 fill quart low and its howling quite a bit... just in neutral, you let the clutch go and it whines quite a bit. Hoping topping off the fluid works.

So yeah.. equivalents of GM Synchromesh.... anyone?

this, since pennzoil is who makes the synchromesh you'd buy at the dealership anyway.

And, syncromesh is closer to 5w30 engine oil anyway (which I think is close to 75/80W gear oil -> see here at a motorcycle forum for comparison of engine oil vs gear oil http://hdforums.com/forum/oil-and-oil-related-topics/45785-engine-oil-vs-gear-oil.html )

Except syncromesh isn't 5w30, it is similar in its viscosity but has slightly different wear characteristics that make it more suitable for a gearbox.

People have used ATF in j-body transaxles with success as well.

Sleeper style, they don't see it coming that way.

Ignoring the first part of your statement, the people who use ATF in J-bodies with success have the Getrag trans, which specs ATF from the factory.

Synchromesh can only be synchromesh.....that is it.

Most parts stores, even in Canada, should carry it.
