Dies when stopping
Friday, February 27, 2009 6:26 AM
I have a 91 sunbird 2.0 tbi. When I stop sometimes, it will stall, but fires right back up. I've noticed that the problem is worse when the outside air is warm, and almost nonexistant when the temp is around 40 or cooler. Any ideas?
I have already checked the control module, coil, IAT and oxygen sensor, replaced the plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor.

First all do u have a check engine light on? How about the fuel filter?, Also have u checked the Map sensor hose for cracks or leaks.
Is youre sunbird auto or manual? If automatic could have an issue with youre O/D soloide in the transmission.

Good Luck Keep us updated.

The check engine light is not on now. It did have one code set before, for the O2 sensor, but that cleared with driving. I'm about to change the fuel filter now, and I'll check the MAP.

Neither, it cleared when I started driving longer drives instead of just short hops around town. I have replaced the fuel filter and coil, and think I found the problem. On the distributor, where the wires go in there is a rubber boot. This boot has slipped down, and I think it is causing the problem. I'll post again if I'm right or wrong.

i would love to talk to you more. i have the same identical problem but if you let it go longer because you cant figure it out it gets worse. my car will run fine if the temp outside is 35 degrees or lower. now if it is hot outside my car will die every 2 minutes on me and take about 1-2 minutes to start back up. my problem did start out like yours though-where it just died when i would stop and now it has progressed to this.

It has gotten worse. I can't get it to start at all. I have replaced the map sensor, coil, rebuilt the fuel pump relay socket, replaced the fusible link, cleaned the injector socket, and it still won't get gas. My next guesses are EGR valve, fuel injector. Have you tried these?
