Hey all.
This is a 98 2.4.
We installed a new battery 2 weeks ago because every now & then, we would have to jump start the carn when it sat for a few days...
Everything was working good w/ the new battery.
Saturday night- The battery light comes on AND the ABS light. We test the voltage @ the battery with the car running. Its sitting around 10.8, when reved- it actually dipped a little lower. So, the battery is obviously not charging..
Okay, so yesterday. I replace the alternator on the car. It fires right up. The battery light & ABS light are OUT and the voltage was reading @ 14.4 when running... Seems okay..
Today, my brother calls me up to say that the battery light came on again when he turned on the heater. It turned off when he turned the heater off...
All the terminals seemed tight and corrosion free. The alternator plug is fully seated.
IS THERE A FUSE FOR A VOLTAGE REGULATOR in these cars???
Does anyone have any ideas on what might cause this...???
I dont have a problem w/ going through & upgrading all the power wires in this car, but it was never a problem before...
Any info is appreciated. Thanks.'
I've had a similar situation such as this.
things that happened to me
First time was when the charging cable from the alternator come loose from the starter lug (it runs from the alternator to the starter then back to the battery)
i solved it by upgrading the size of the cable and ran it back to the battery terminal of my amp wiring
the second time was when the chassis ground broke it was intermittently grounding which caused the battery to over heat fixed the ground and threw in my spare battery from the trunk to get me home.
Well,
I had a chance to take a look at it again...
The battery voltage was 10.4 @ idle & it wasn't rising w/ the rpms.
I cleaned up the ground on the battery tray, but that didn't help. All the connections are tight & clean and I didn't see any damage to the wires,
I checked all the fuses...
We are going to replace the alternator again, theres a possibility that we may have received a defective one... I just don't understand how the thing was working fine w/ 14.4v while running, but stopped working within a day or 2.
The 2nd alternator seemed to have fixed the problem...
I guess we just got a bad one the first time around...
Thanks to jgilk1 for actually chiming in here,....
Yes I had the same problems, local auto parts store had a bunch of bad alternators, I pay the extra cash get new, Instead of remanf ones.
Good to hear problem solved.
