Hey guys, my engine just started making this ticking sound on Sunday night. It almost sounds like when you stick a card in the spokes of your bike tire. Sounds like it's coming from the motor, but I'm not positive. Any suggestions? It's a 99 z24. Thank You
what part of the engine bay does it sound like its coming from - driver, passenger? Is the noise really loud? How about when you rev the engine, does it go away or get louder? More info please - it sucks trying to diagnose problems over the net but we can try...
Sounds like it's coming from the top of the motor. It comes from the center of the car. The noise gets louder as you increase the rpms. When you rev the enigine it makes the sound around 2000rpms. It makes the sound in every gera, usually louder at higher rpms.
lol i just made a thread on this. I dont know what is it. It's coming from the right side of my engine near the power steering. I hear it once I hit 2 ½ rpms. Sounds like it's spuddering. I don't really hear it once I pass 3 rpms. I can't find anyone else with this problem. I assume it will be awhile before I find out. I will probably take it to a shop in April. I have a 2000 Z
Lack of oil pressure! or a damaged engine!
Have your engine diagnosed, if your oil pressure is critically low, or you have no oil pressure, chances are the engine is damaged if you have been driving it around or running it.
Both of these problems sound like different issues.
If you have a 2.4L engine (Z24) don't be surprised if you have to change it a few times.
I'm on my 4th engine, and the car only has 180,000 km.
Oh God don't tell me that. How long after hearing that noise would an engine last?
It will last until the bearing decides it does not want to play anymore. I am a blown engine 4th award Z24 owner, 84k miles, but they all happened under 36k miles, Mr Goodwrench can eat my a$$.
Use a stethescope *sp* to see if it is coming from the top or bottom, if it is a rod bearing you want to order up a new crank rod and all bearings if youre gm.... do it right and get a new engine for 500 bucks and youre good usually

run sea foam through the oil before you change it

Hey Wiliam, yes the sound my car was making sounds very similiar to the one your Z is making. It turns out there is something wrong with the motor. It is probably going to need a new one. I will keep you posted as I hear from my mechanic.
sounds like oil pressure maybe a bad oil pump not priming the lifters
i have the same sound in my ecotec.. not as bad though and not always there either.
