2.4 Kings - Help needed

Here is the senario, and please no flaming... I know the situation is no ideal...

I had a rattle develop in the engine. It sounds like it is in the lower block or atleast is echoing into the oil pan...
I am assuming spun rod bearing...

Now this is the thing though, the rattle is sparatic, it will be there for 10 sec, gone 20 sec, be there 5 sec, be gone 30 sec...
Assuming it is just were the "lobe" in the bearing is lining up on the throw...

Assuming this senario is there anyway POSSIBLE that I would be able to drive 20,000 miles (roughly) with NO CEL ( from knock sensor), relitively no loss of power, little to no oil consumption, no gas in my regular oil changes and no rod through my block?

I need ideas as to what this could possibly be...
Help?

this is the same issue I am having with my engine right now. I will be disassembling everything this spring to try and figure out the noise. My engine has 1 mile since I rebuilt it so I'm afraid of a spun bearing as well

Same thing happened to me and it was a loose flywheel. Try pressing on the clutch if you have one.

Nope, Auto trans... But I guess that a flex plate rattle would make sense....
I'll have to check to see if I can localize the sound to that side of the engine...

In the event that it is the flex plate, do these things have enough room in them to just pivot the engine to get at the flex plate bolts or am I going to pick up a cherry picker?

engine has to come out to get at the flex plate to crankshaft bolts.

First I do not think the knock sensor will throw a CEL for getting knock. I know when I have worked on 2.4's with true spun bearings they never had a CEL.

John...Do you think the sporadic knock could be a spun bearing as the OP described??? This sounds a lot like the issue with my engine even though I have less than 1 mile after the rebuild. Part of my problem might be the jbp oil pump i'm afraid

Without hearing I really can't say.

My ex wife had a 96 grand am with a 2.4. At 130k it got a funny noise. You could rev it sounded fine, idle sounded fine, but at driving speeds at steady throttle it had a rattle/knock. Took it to different places. Most thought maybe a wrist pin. Everyone said not a rod knock. Some said timing chain guides. Pulled oil pan no signs of rod. Finally after dirinv for over a month like this, pulled the motor. Spun rod bearing. Polished the crank, new gaskets, bearings and put it back together good to go.
