First of all I wasnt sure where to post this so mods please feel free to place this thread in the appropriate forum.
I have a 96 cavalier z24 convertible. I was driving the car one day and had to stop by home to pick something up. when i went back to start the car to leave it wouldnt crank.
It seems to start up fine but will not stay running more than a second. It cranks and dies almost immediately. i have just done a complete tune up on the car about 5k ago and im getting good spark and it does have fuel pressure. I asked a local mechanic about it and he said the car could think that it is stolen or the computers dont recognize each other anymore. Which doesnt make good sense to me since i was driving the car around with no problems not 10 minutes before.
He also said that if it was the passlock keeping it from staying running i could do some sort of starting sequence where you turn the car on, leave the key in the run position for ten minutes try to start again without turning the key off or something of the sort. I was wondering if anyone knew the exact method to troubleshoot for this problem.
any advice or information will be greatly appreciated
Seems unlikely that passlock would enable in such a situation...
I guess anything is possible, but unlikely that it would just up and quit.
You said that it will start but then instantly die;
Can you immediately start it up again and it will run for a second and die again?
When starting, can you get it to crank, rev the engine, does it still die out?
I.E. Start you car with you gas pedal half depressed, see if you can maintain the idle...

After it starts it wont start again, it just turns over. i can turn the key off, try it, and it will start up again. if ether is sprayed in the TB it will run untill you stop spraying but knocks. it will rev to about 2500 when i rev it when starting but it cuts out.
Your my god
thats exactly what I was looking for. It seems that I was using the wrong Procedure. Does it make a difference if the OBD2 port still works? I have heard that most of the time when it doesnt work its on the same circuit as the cigarette lighter socket. I really appreciate that Rich
So, it dumped the passlock code for NO reason?
No part switching, no dead batteries, no nothing?
When did this become common?

I just put a new redtop in it could that have an effect? It was charged to the best of my knowledge
Shouldn't have if it was charged...
How long did you have the battery out while changing it?
I have heard storys of like 45 mins passing and it locking up, but not usually a 5-10 minute battery swap...

i never did anything to the battery. Just pulled in cut it off and came back a few minutes later and it happend. The password relearn procudure worked though so im satisfied, thank you.
