I am replacing the front strut assembly on the driver side.
I am buying another assembly that is used.
Does it matter what side it came from and what side it will go on?
and does a wheel aligament have to be done?

the side you pull it from is the side it goes on...after replaced yes an alignment should be done..
^^^^^ he tells the truth.
So if the new one is from the passenger side it can't go on the drivers side??
Are they not the same?

I would say yes they can be swaped unless they are stamped L for left and R for right or D for driver and P for passenger. But for struts for j's eather side will work with the other side no issues. If im wrong please provided pictures to prove

Year and model would help?!?! ON my sunfire and all fires for that fact the front struts are not right or left and if you pull the whole assembly and replace it with another factory one from a like car your alignment will be fine. this should apply to to all cavs and fires 95+
There is no difference between left and right on Js. and yes you will need an alignment when finished. the origional ones put on when the car was built do not have the elongated holes for camber adjustments like the oem replacement ones or any aftermarket struts
is there any other way to remove the front strut without an impact gun?? this is the only thing stopping me so far... (99 sunfire).
They sell a special socket tool for removing the nut from the top of the strut. I've always just used a socket and an open end wrench.
