I own a 2001 pontiac sunfire gt and recently noticed my odometer flickering and certain numbers blank out; the rest of the dash illuminates as normal. I've browsed the forum and found this is a comment problem; some say whack the panel, others say you must replace the entire cluster, and some have replaced the soldered on a new bulb. Before I take any of these steps, is it necessary? Will I run into any problems if I don't fix the odometer? What's the best action to take?
Thanks.
I have the same prob, in fact, Mine has stopped illuminating all together. I can still see my odometer in the daytime very faintly, just at night with no light I can't at all.
Any info would help us both.
Thank you.
I also had this problem with my 2000 Sunfire, and replacing the cluster took care of the problem. Don't be concerned about the mileage being different between the clusters, because it is stored elsewhere. Check ebay for a new cluster.

same problem with my 01 cav. possibly from the subs rattling everything in the car loose.
mine is also completely out.
Mine is completely out also. What a pain in the a$$
My '99 had the flickering odo problem. I found that I could affect it by repeatedly using the button to switch it to trip and reset and after a while of doing this, it went back to working normally. I now reset it regularly when I buy gas and it's worked fine ever since. There must be some contacts imbedded inside that get oxidized without regular use.
Bulb just gets old and filament gets weak, but it connects once in a while when jarred and illuminates again... Only way to fix other than a new cluster is unsoldering the needle motors out, and unsoldering the LCD for the odo... unsolder the bulb and put new one in its place.

common problem. especially after taking the dash apart. smack the dash a few times. if it doesnt go away then i dunno the price to fix it isnt worth it. put a pieace of electrical tape on it if it bothers u a lot
