Car sounds like a subaru... missfire after Bad Alt + Vac leak
Monday, April 27, 2009 7:14 PM
So I got up this morning, drove a mile down the road and car shutoff... Alternator died... I used a Jumperbox to Crank the car and get it back to the house, when I cranked the car backfired and Blew my EGR block off plug out of the intake mani causing the car to rev crazy(BIG vac leak, no brakes either)

Well i get it limped back, get a ride to work, After work I pick up a new Alt, Install it and Fix the leak(epoxy the vac plug in) and crank the car... Its running like crap, Sounds like a Subie and seems to be firing on 3 cylinders.... With the direct coil I cant tell if its not firing spark on a cylinder, but I pulled the Plugs and #1 was suit black.. Thought it was a fouled plug so I got all new plugs... Nothing.

Any idea what the problem is... I tried driving it and randomly it would clear up for 2-3 secs then run like @!#$ again.

No ideas? Possibly a Bad coil? How do I test to figure out which one?

chazz, with all the money you have into that engine i think it would be best to do the 2.2 coil swap. Trust me it makes life so much easier...

I found a huge scorch mark in the coil housing, going to get a new one now.

Yea I will probably go with an MSD 2.2 Coil swap, but cant afford it ATM

Agreed. My car would not start when cold. I replaced the coil pack and it fixed everything. I then did the 2.2 swap the next day and returned the parts.

What about the hose off the manifold for the map sensor?

I will have to read up on the MSD coil swap. I bought everything just looked at how much of a PITA it will be to get to the factory coils.
