Ok, so i have a 2002 Cavalier with the 2.2L, 2200sfi. Today i put a new intake on and noticed that there was oil in my stock intake and around the breather hose (i believe that's what it is, the hose that comes from the head and goes into the plastic that says "2200sfi" on it) Around the breather hose on the plastic piece there was oil around there too. I put the new intake on and took it for a drive and there was a small amount of oil in the new tube going to the new intake so i believe that the oil is coming out of the breather.
I would just like to know if anyone knows why this is happening and what i can do to fix it.
If my description doesn't really tell you enough about what parts i'm talking about there's a picture posted below.
Red - Where i believe the oil is coming from
Yellow - Oil spot on plastic
Orange - More oil i found in the intake
your solution is a breather filter on both the valve cover and the intake. a breather filter takes that oil and breaths it into the atmosphere. illegal but will solve the problem immediately
Or you could do it the right way and install an oil catch...
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
yea yea i know. lol. im jus goin the cheaper route. oil catch can is better anyways. then you dont have oil residue on the inside of your hood.
I did an oil catch for $25 from Lowes, I'm betting 2 of those little filters will cost close to that.
They're next to the air compressors in Lowes, then you just need fittings, clamps and hose.

very nice. i never even thought of lowes man. an actually both of the filters when i bought them at o reillys were like 6 bucks a piece so it was cheaper then. i doubt it now though. i would go with a catch can an prolly will once i fix my head gasket
Ok, thanks for the tips i obviously don't know a whole lot about this so when i found the oil i got a bit confused. So, the breather filter solution is pretty simple, but how would i go about doing the oil catcher? And one more question, my intake doesn't remove the plastic the reads "2200sfi" and now there's a hole in that where my old breather tube attached too, any idea what to do about that?
your talking about the whole plastic piece that says 2200sfi on it right. cause if so it comes off you just have to make sure you have all the screws/bolts out of it. i believe there are a couple close to the intake manifold. it was a long time ago that i took mine off so my bad if im wrong
Well the only problem with that is i can't take mine off, the intake i have is attached to it where the old intake pipe comes off so if i take it off there's no way for my intake to hook up. I may just cut off the piece that's sticking out of it and try to plug the hole with something.
well theres also a little clamp that holds it to the throttle body. that could be why you cant get it off. i know it comes off because i have the exact same car as yours. i couldnt see it unless i held a flashlight close to it when i took mine off

this is my car
I may go with the solution of the breather filters, a little easier... and i'm not even sure how to hook up an oil catcher to be honest with you.

Even the same color, mine obviously lol
Mount the catch can, run a hose from the breather to a nipple on top of the can, and either run a hose back to the intake of your car or toss alittle filter on the 2nd nipple.

My DD is doing the same thing..... my throttle body was so black the car wouldnt even idle right.... If t happens again I'm just gunna pull the hose and put a little air filter on the valve cover and plug the hole in the intake piping.
You could always go that route also... its pretty damn cheap if you dont want to do it the "right" way with the catch can.
It's actually perfectly normal to get some oil in the intake from the PCV and breather.

yes it is perfectly normal but if its left unchecked if you have a few things done to your car it could cause damage. thats why i got the breather filters for mine. that and i just dont like the look of having oil in the bottom of my intake manifold

What's it going to damage?

ive never had that problem. are you putting too much oil into the block? if you cant fix the problem my a valve cover vent filter. and plug the intake vacuum port
Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.
its sludge an not really oil. an if you get too much it goes back into the motor therefore damaging it. thats why i got my breather filter in the first place
i have the same problem on my 98. its a 2.2 with 172k miles on her and got the car in 2003 when i was 18, i was young and dumb then and pretty much drove the piss out of the car for years and now has a noisy lifter or two along with the blow-by coming out of the valve cover breather. i guess the old age and years of beating it are catching up to old girl. But my problem is that the metal piece that goes into the calve cover somehow rattled out a little after i put a little mini filter on it. So now im stuck with a hole in the valve cover with nothing there. Im not sure if its called the pcv but i need to find the metal piece thats suposed to be in there so i can run some kind of an oil catcher in there....any suggestions ??
