loosing clutch fluid....
Friday, May 01, 2009 6:39 PM
At least once a week my clutch starts dragging and I open the hood and the clutch fluid reservoir is nearly empty....I add some and its good till the next time. I tried checking it more frequently but it wasnt very helpful. I drive 100 miles mostly highway daily for work. Any ideas where the fluid is going? Theres never any spots on the ground where I park, and things look pretty dry under my hood. Any help is appreciated

into the tranny, or you are driving really really really really really really hard and burning it. how does the pedal feel. is it mushy or hard, does it ever "stick" down?

look for leaks.

best way to solve the problem is replace the clutch master cylinder/ slave cylinder and all the lines.

I also have this problem, and it's driving me nuts. I just keep a big bottle of dot3 in the trunk. Eventually, i'm going to have to fix it, but that's a lot of work.

i know in some cars, where the clutch cylinder comes into the car, the seal on the shaft wears out and causes the fluid to leak into the cabin (in my case after a long trip i have a spot on my footwear) Get a light and look under the dash towards the cylinder and if it looks greasy then that is your problem.

Nah I barely use it, mostly highway for my drives. But it feels and works good, this issue just happens from time to time and it kinda bothers me. I didnt know if I was gonna have to replace the clutch and everything. Im trying to avoid that expense......

Why is it I have a vague recollection of a high slave cylinder failure rate associated with the master cylinder on 03-04 Cavaliers, and there being a revised master cylinder.

Any idea where I can find a new clutch master cylinder? None of the auto parts stores can get one.....

is dot 3 bad in the transmission?

Clutch fluid cant make it into the transmission, unless you have something horrible wrong, but yes I would say it is bad to have in the tranny.

Jack the car up and look at the hole in the bell housing right below the flywheel. If there is oil on the tranny side you are either leaking tranny fluid or your slave cylinder if leaking, which would cause the loss in fluid. If the oil is on the engine side it is probably just your main seal, which seem to like to leak.

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
