whats it cost to get a new ac compressor?
Monday, May 11, 2009 11:17 AM
i read the sticky, but didnt seem to help me figure out my problem.

my air hasnt been blowing cold for a couple years... i simply havent been using it because it didnt work.

i had it charged with the UV freon so they could see the leak and ran out of money to get it checked / fixed

i took it home yesterday and to a reputable mechanic (family been going to him for years and years)

got a quote of 850 to replace the 'leaking' compressor, from the dealer they quoted me 1300 for a refurb'ed one

just wondering if its maybe possible to just fix the compressor i have (why would this thing go bad anyways? it went bad at like 40,000 miles) or cheaper to do it myself some other way...

if anyone has any ideas or helpful tips, let me know

thanks

probably the seals on the compressor. i just had the one on my sonoma replaced and it was right at 200 for the part and i paid 100 to have it installed with freon.

Repairs on modern AC systems aren't generally suited for home-mechanics without the tools or training. The refrigerant and oils used are much different from twenty years ago. While you can get the parts relatively inexpensively in the aftermarket or on-line, shops often balk at installing your parts as they make money on theirs and won't warranty yours. I just bought a compressor, dryer, expansion valve and orifice tube setup from an online vendor for under $200 that I'm sure a shop would charge me $800 for. I have the knowledge to install it all myself, but will need to take it somewhere for a final charge. (I'll take a chance on the warranty.)

I've actually had reasonable luck with AC systems in used cars I've bought as owners seem to rarely have them fixed, assuming it will be expensive. A couple of times it was a $2 valve that leaked all the Freon out and all that was needed was the valve and recharge. Doesn't happen very often, but you have to love it when it does.

my mechanic seems fairly certain that the compressor needs replaced

Bryan,
If your mechanic is 100% sure it is the compressor, if you want to spend the bucks and get original part, you could order it from gmpartsdirect.com The price is $322.15 with shipping. The part number is 89018839.

i dont have the time to do it myself, honestly i dont have the time to learn.. before i do something like that i would need to learn what im doing

i think im going to have the mechanic replace it, hes a very trustworthy guy and its the best deal $ wise i can find anywhere too..

the dealer says there is a lifetime warranty on the refurb compressor, but its refurbed, and when (not if) if breaks i have to pay 6 hours of labor at the dealer for a new one.. just to wait for it to break again

Refurbished parts go through a more strict quality test than new parts. And should always come with a warrenty, so I see no problem in buying refurbished parts.

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
