Have a P0455, sets consistently. I grabbed a scan tool and there is definitely no vacuum building in the system (small amount, but disappears immediately when the purge valve closes). So I definitely have a leak.
Replaced gas cap - problem still exists.
Checked purge solenoid - seems okay.
Checked vent solenoid - seems okay.
Before I have to pay a dealer $80 to use a smoke machine, is there any "common" spot where these things like to develop a leak? Was hoping there might be a popular spot before I decide to crawl around under the car.....
2004 Sunfire, 2.2L. Unfortunately outside of warranty.
Thanks in advance.
Nah, mines got the same thing...can't find anything on it, been looking for awhile. Tried about the same thing. If I could find a diagram of the hoses I'd try to check them for leaking. There's a small diagram under the hood but not specific enough.
Canister close valve is pretty common. The 02' had that fail. check the hoses make sure nothing was hit or damaged.
mine and my brother's went. just have it deleted!

Here's a little trick I tried yesterday and it seems to have worked-so far: I got a new gas cap but it still seemed to be loose so I got a thin piece of cardboard, such as a cracker box, and made me an O ring gasket just big enough to fit over the part that sticks in but small enough on the outside no to protrude past the edge of the gas cap. That tightened up the cap quite a bit more than it was and like I said, has worked so far.
Like I said, it SEEMED to work. Just for one day and now the light's back on. I may go ahead and try the vent valve solenoid after I check the hoses and tanks one more time.
If you delete the vent valve doesn't that set off the check engine light?
Well just an update on this POS thing.
-Verified Purge Valve using multimeter and listening/feeling for activity - measures ~20ohms and appears to be functioning correctly.
-Verified Vent Valve using multimeter and listening for activity - measures ~24ohms and appears fine.
-Crawled under car, disconnected hose from canister to Vent Valve, and blew air into canister. System won't hold pressure, and I can hear a hissing noise. Sounds like it's coming from the top of the fuel tank/sender unit somewhere.... unfortunately further than I can crawl under there w/o a lift.
So, after laying on the ground and wrapping my lips around a dirty, fuel vapor-filled hose, it appears I'm going to need someone to drop the fuel tank on this stupid POS, and probably have to pay my left nut if I want to fix it. Quality.
