Can a gas cap cause starting problems?

My sons 97 2.4 Sunfire GT is having problems starting. It is only happening when he is low on gas.

I thought maybe I was pulling a vacuum in the tank or something.

Any ideas for me?

thanks...gary

A loose gas cap has been known to cause an EVAP engine code... That was on my buddy's Breeze.

As far as starting, I dunno.

Maybe I am having a problem with the fuel pump?
any ideas.
The vehicle was tuned three months ago, didn't expect starting problems so soon

I would bet money on a bad fuel pump but check the fuel pressure first to be sure.

Not a good idea to run it low on fuel. First, the fuel helps keep the fuel pump cool; after all it is submersed in fuel. Secondly, it is probably sucking some air if it is really low on gas. Should keep 1/4 tank at least.

Well, Its my unemployed son driving the car. So there is no controlling how much gas stays in the car.
