Possible Problem Brewing???
Monday, May 18, 2009 7:21 PM
Well yesterday, I was coming home from the store and was making a left hand turn at a stop light. The light was green, but i had no arrow to go so i had to wait til the traffic was clear ahead to turn. Well, i slowed down by downshifting and as i got closer to 1st gear, everytime i put the clutch in, my RPM's would drop down to 0 and as i came to a stop, the car stalled. Restarted it, turned, made another turn and came up to a stop sign. Same thing, i could feel/see it was going to staal again, so i revved it so i could get back home. What could be the issue here? Had 1/2 tank of gas, wasn't overheated, nothing. Just caught me very surprised and confused.

Also, every once in a while, when i go to start my car, it won't turn over and just makes like a ERRR sound. Turn the key again and it starts. Been doing that ever since i got the car 2 or 3 years ago. Any idea what that could be and if they may be related?? Thanks guys

Well the 2nd problem is more than likely the starter. Replace it and you should be good to go.

But as for the 1st problem, i dunno exactly. My 03 did the same thing once in a while last summer and i wrote it off as GM @!#$ty tune.

Be sure you have the clutch pushed in all the way if it is a stick.

There's a TSB for stall when clutch depressed,

Component Description:
16. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Bulletin Number: 610
Bulletin Date: Oct 2004
Vehicle: 2,002 Pontiac Sunfire

Summary:
ENGINE IDLE FLARE WHEN THE CLUTCH IS DEPRESSED. ALSO LOW SPEED ENGINE DECEL STALL WHEN COMING TO A STOP. GM TECH LINK. ( NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 10015768 )

The solution is to get the PCM re-flashed with latest update.

The TSB quoted above is for the 2.2L Eco, I have the 2.4L, that had the same problem with idle flare AND low speed stall. The re-flash fixed the problem.

Vehicle says for sunfires. Could this be for the cavaliers too? I noticed that too when im slowing down. It dont stall, the RPMs just go really low when i press in the clutch pedal.

Hmm, that's interesting. Ya i got an eco obviously, and it's a manual. So i know the clutch is all the way down DUH. As for this reflash, is that something i'd have to go to a GM dealer for? Basically this happened when i downshift and when i'm going from 5th to 4th to 3rd to 2nd, when i push the clutch to the floor, the RPM's dive below 500. The other day when i was turning, i was stopped with the clutch in and in first gear, and it stalled. So you're saying a reflash would fix that?? If so, would that cost me anything out of pocket?? Thanks guys.

The flash is done with the GM Tech 2 tool.
The cost depends on the dealer, and how they bill for labour.
I'm in Canada, and have had it done twice for 2 different reasons.
The first time I was charged $34 Cdn. (2 years ago in Markham, ON.) - This was for a different problem.
The second time I was charged $116 Cdn. ( 3 months ago in Brampton, ON) - Of course the dealer gave me a bunch of B.S. that the TSB didn't apply to me, because I had the 2.4L, and they had to examine the car first, blah, blah, blah - then they reflashed it, and it fixed my idle flare and occasional stall problem.

maybe a clutch issue? if the clutch is engaged as you stop.. it would stall.
