Strut Mount Removal

I've seen a couple posts on removing strut mounts... But I have a procedure in mind, wondering if it will work. My car is a 1998 Sunfire GT. I was thinking, if I leave the car on the ground and undo the top nut then slowly jack the car up from the jacking point on the rocker panel until all the spring tension is gone, will I be able to remove just the mount and replace it? In theory it would work, but I don't know if it will lower enough to replace the mount. Anyone try doing it like this?

First question is which one are you trying to change? Lower motor mount or suspension strut mount?. If you are replacing the suspension strut mount, U are gonna need a few important tools here as I list em for you.

List: 1.) Descent beaker bar or pipe to fit over youre ratchet, Impact gun and lots of WD40 spray.
2.) Not sure whats sizes of deep sockets, I am sure you will need 21mm deep socket, If u got 100pc socket set, Also pair of needle nose pilars, Few wrenches, The you should be good to go.
3.) Also u will need a strut coil spring compressing tool, That allow the pressure off the coil spring, Before you take apart the strut mount.

Basically it a pretty easy un/ install,

Good Luck.

From the post, it clearly says Strut Mount... so I'll take it's the top mount on the struts.

If you can get a socket on the top nut through the stock mount... then yes, you can loosen the top nut that way. But you'll still have to take the lower part of the strut off the knuckle to get the mount out of the car... there isn't enough travel on the assembly to leave the bottom connected to the car to do it the way you've described.

And from my experience... the rod will just spin anyway.... so go and rent the proper tools you'll need to do this... or take your struts out of the car in one piece, then take them to a shop with the right tools to have it done. It's way less of a headache.

Thanks John, I will see how much the shop will charge to change out the bearing in the mount, or the mount as a complete whole.
