How much should it cost to replace the water pump on a 1999 Sunfire GT (2.4L?) I used to have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire GT and the water pump went out. They said it would cost over $600, but I had the extended warranty so I just had to pay for the $100 deductible.
Now my water pump on my 1999 Sunfire seems to be going out and they said it would take 7 hours labor(!) to replace it! that seems a little insane....why would it take so long to take out? is there an easier way to do it?
do it yourself. $40 for pump at autozone with the core and about $7 for gaskets.

I wish I could, but i don't know anything about repairing that type of stuff..
o-yeah you might have to pull exhaust too which is a $12 gasket. your best bet is finding a tech to do it on the side in your driveway or his...it will be ALOT cheaper. I HATE DEALERSHIPS! THEY RAPE YOU!
also you need more coolant if yours can't be saved...got to thinking and it is NOT a easy task. timing cover has to come off and made sure timing doesn't get screwed up....leave it to the professionals.
If you only had to pay $100 to get your waterpump changed you jsut dodged a bullet...i dropped $700ish, its labor intensive indeed.
i just took mine off for freeeeeee, i wish i was where you are so i can have your money....no disrespect

About a three hour job in the driveway with hand tools. Its easy as long as you pay attention to what you are doing.
I have a dumb question, where is the radiator cap on the 2.4L engine? The reservoir is the only place i know of to put in coolant....
There is no radiator cap.

x2, It will cost you about as much as your favorite beer + parts.
it seems that i have to add more coolant around every 3 months. Which i can live with until it gets worse. I have noticed that there is a coolant smell coming from the hood a lot,....might it be leaking somewhere else? i only smell it inside the car when the window is open.

How the hell did you do it in 3 hours??? Left the exhaust on?
After doing my water pump on my LD9, First time took 6 hours(with beer) without removing the exhaust, im pretty confident i could do it in half the time now, so 3 hours doesnt seem to unreasonable.
Yeah, those 2.4s are a bee-otch to change the water pump. Its easy to end up spending almost as much as the car is worth on an older/high mileage one. My 2.2 doesn't have the "juice" of a 2.4, but its a lot easier to work on IMO.
Yeah, water pumps on those engines are a PITA, though I wouldn't recommend tinkering around if you dont know what you are doing. Best bet would be to find someone (ask around on JBO) who would walk you through it and help. When it went on my Sunfire it cost me about $100, $60 in parts and $40 in beer for my gearhead friends who walked me through it. They have since lost their licenses.
Yay, guess what im doing next weekend!!! Yup, My girls vert has a issue with the damn water pump. We will see how hard this crap really is. Only good thing is that the heat sheild on the top of the header was not put back on since we reinstalled the motor. So maybe, just maybe it will be just a smidge easier.

Its not that hard of an engine to work on. I pulled my header which is the PITA Stans header. Im not sure why everyone seems to think its so hard to work on a 2.4.
^^ Prolly just bc of the amount of crap to remove in order to get to the water pump, but ur right, I had the engine pulled and torn down in under 3 hours. Not a bad engine to work on, just kinda a PITA with it in the car. But nonetheless still can be done.
Only thing I can say is watch that damn tensioner.....make sure to reset it before u put the timing chain cover back on......I would know...oh and dont forget the beer
You might want to look at the plastic quick disconnect down stream from the water pump. I thought my water pump was leaking again, but when i jacked up the car i found a stream dripping from that. Thats only $12 and not that intense
hey um also RIGHT in the middle of changing my water pump. I hav taken off my header and motor mount already. But when I attempt to take off the motor mount bracket adapter the bolts hit the frame of the engine bay before they even get screwed all the way out...its so confusing! How do i get those three bolts out? The manual says that I must take that adapter off before I can get the timing chain cover off which I can then take the tensioner off and access the water pump. Is there another route I can take to get the water pump off??? lol PLEASE let me know if there is. I really wanna get this done ASAP. Or do i have to lower the engine? and if so how much? wat do i have to take loose? Thanks in advance guys - any help is greatly appreciated.

Then dont go to them. They are a business, they arent there to lose money. You have no idea the overhead costs of running a shop, none.
Take a few business management classes, and then run a shop the you will see what it is really like

Also check the water neck at the back of the head, above the trans bellhousing. We thought my gfs Mailbu (2.4tc) was having either thermostat or water pump issues, large coolant leak, but turns out the plastic water neck at the back of the head had deteriorated and was leaking badly.
