Hub nut torque specs?

Ok well im putting on a new hub assembly and well the one i had on previously went bad only after 10k so i went to get another and the guy said i most likely torqued it down to much and found some number (144ft/lbs)

well here is my dilemma my haynes manual says 185 ft/lbs and so does the little hand out that came in the box with the assembly.

anyone know what it really is?

Basically, as tight as you can get it. My dad ran an impact wrench while I bounced on a pipe wrench on the socket to get the old one off, I weight 220lbs. Driving the car makes it tighter. The bearing could have been bad in the replacement you had put on, and there's no way to check this before you put it on since it's sealed.

^^^ That right there is retardedly stupid advice and is the cause of many premature bearing failures. Overtightening stresses the bearing.

Tighten it to exactly 185 foot lbs with a torque wrench. Undertighten it and it will fail prematurely, grossly overtighten it and it WILL fail prematurely.

There is a reason we get recommended torque specs, they aren't fantasyland #'s.
