So when i got in my car today i noticed that it only got to a quarter temperature in about 20 mins of driving. I thought this was strange, but since i had no low coolant or overheating i thought it was a thermostat or the gauge. Then when i got home i decided to let it run and see if the fan would come on. It didnt. it overheated, the fan didnt come on, and the gauge wasnt even at half. whats wrong?! I need help please this is my daily driver! car is a 95 sunfire 2.2 5 speed. thanks!
Sorry i didnt search first...Now that i have searched i believe it to be the coolant temperature sensor..but ive only read that the register too high not too low..? is it possible?
Have you done anything latley to the coolant system? If so, you may have introduced an air bubble, which needs to be burped for the coolant system to work right.
If not, why do you say it "overheated"? If the fan doesn't turn on and the coolant temp. sensor reads low, nothing will happen. If it overheated, but the fan never turned on and the guage never moved past 1/2.......... How do you know it overheated? what happened? Was coolant shooting out of junction points or what?
Have not touched the coolant system since i got the car. I know it over heated because i leaked a lot of coolant out and it was steaming out of the cap.
Check you coolant level (might not be a bad idea to flush it) replace your coolant temperature sensor and make sure your fan and relay for the fan are working.
Im planning on doing that this week. Also going to put in a new thermostat i think. Thanks!
STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1: Let's think about this....
2: You know what a thermostat is, that's good. Put it and a thermometer in a pan of water and start to cook them (in water). If the thermostat is working, it will open when the outside thermometer (Water temperature) = its operating temperature.
3: if it fails, you have a failed themostat
If not, you have something else wrong. Let us know.
Same thing happened to my car, I just needed to replace the termostat, it worked just fine after that, I also needed to replace a fuse.
I'm not going anywhere just yet
