How high does it go? Does the fan work?

Yes my guess would be too does the cooling fan work?. Also is all the air out of the coling system?. Also how about all the hoses are they replaced? Could have colapsed hose, Water pump could be a problem, Usually when its no good it leaks out the weep hole. Then worst case issue could might have a hd gasket issue. Just do a follow on those trouble taks then, Maybe the hd gasket is last problem.

Good Luck,

the fan does work, and all the hoses have been replaced. it goes to about 230-240 then the fan comes on. but it should run cool without a thermostat right?

Without the thermostat, Makes youre car not function properly, Cause then it doesnt keep its normal operation temp. My cavalier get hot @ idle, Nothing to crazy with temperatures, If possible, If you could get pic of what youre temp gauge is @ then we can see whats going on.

Good Luck

How long to reach this temp when idling? Do you have a WAI installed?
