Key cylinder replacement options

In the six years that I've owned my cavalier, this is the second time the key cylinder has failed on me. The first time, it cost me $300 via mechanic to get fixed. This time, I have a friend fixing it for no labor cost, but he's saying the part is $150, which from a bit of googling, seems to be in the ballpark.

Since this is a consistent problem with cavs (as I found on the msn autos page I believe), I was wondering if there was a key cylinder from other cars that would fit/work in a cavalier. I don't care if its from a 1970 buick, as long as it'll start the car and not fail again in a couple of years like these GM ones are. A source for a cheaper part would work too... he's tried all the local junkyards and no luck.

The car in question is a 1998 base cavalier with the 2200 engine. Thanks for any help!

I have a 97 Z and have never had any such problems like that. I've never heard of that being common either...could just be me though... Do you by chance have a lot of weight on your keychain? A set of heavy keys can cause premature failure.

Cavalier z24......A poor man's Camaro....close enough, right?

Here's my source on it being a common problem:

As for my keys, no, I have an incredibly light keychain. Car key, house key, key to work, and a key for my safe, with one of those small round LED lights on it. That's it.

sounds like to me the guy who replaced it used some aftermarket tumbler, not a delco. you're not going to find any cheaper replacement for the setup because its actually part of the theftlock setup. as for other cars that will work, the part number is the same for 97-99, different for other years. i dont know if they'll work, but knowing how finicky the electrical systems are on these cars, probably not.
