Hi gang, I had a question, but couldn't find the answer anywhere on the forum...
My 99 Cavy (287,500 miles) almost overheated today. We turned it off, and noticed a river of orange fluid (the antifreeze/coolant, I assume) was slowly draining in front of us. When in front of the car facing it, I saw that there was a little box to the immediate top right of the radiator (it seems to be connected). There was a tiny crack in it, and the orange liquid was squirting out of it and draining down to the ground. That was the only place that I saw liquid coming from. I *VERY CAREFULLY* vented the radiator reservoir, and liquid seemed to steam off and discharge from that release tube on the side of the reservoir.
I added water to the reservoir, was able to get it home (yes, I do believe that God does miracles!), and looked at it again. It was no longer leaking, and the water in the reservoir now looks to be coolant fluid again. However, the little block next to/attached to the radiator still has the tiny crack in it. Can anyone tell me if this is something I can fix myself? I just paid $300 to have a starter replaced, and sop I am trying to do this myself. I have the Hayes manual, and have replaced other stuff like alternators, brake pads, rotors, etc., but I am just not sure what to do here. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
little box to the immediate top right of the radiator. I'm not sure what that is
Hey guys, I found out that it was part of the radiator. It will cost me $160 at Auto Zone to get a new radiator. Is there any way to patch a small crack in the radiator? Are there kits or anything?
You aren't going to be able to patch a crack there reliably. It would only be a temporary fix. I've tried it. Shop around though you can get a radiator for under $100
