My parents 1997 Cavalier(automatic trans) backup lights are not working. And I believe it's the backup switch. Before spending the $75 can I just bypass the switch to see if that's the problem. I've heard of people testing theirs with a jumper on the harness but they had a manual transmission is it possible to do it on a automatic transmission because the switch is connected to the neutral safety switch. Also I found a wiring diagram for the backup lights and it say it the pink and the light green wires are for the lights; couldn't I just put a jumper across those two wires or will something bad happen?
You would need to install the jumper wire in place of the switch, if they light up then, than you know the switch is bad, if not than something else.
If they dont light up after bypassing the switch you need to find out, do you have 12V at the switch, do you have 12V on the output side of it, do you have 12V at the lights, if yes, what is the resistance to ground, if more than .200millvolts its to much
Also before you do all that, your fuse is good, and both bulbs are good, like one didnt go out two years ago, and one last week, and you didnt notice it till now
- 2004 Cavalier - 124k, owned since new
also a side note the reverse lights and brake lights won't work if the hazzards are partially on lol long story behind that one
Thanks for the help it turned out to be a broken wire in the trunk.
