Phantom oil leak(2.4)
Wednesday, August 26, 2009 1:24 PM
Hey whats up guys.
I have an oil leak on my 98z..Cant find the source for the life of me.It leaves a few drops wherever i park my car on the drivers side. Its leaking from somewhere below the head and above the pan.The oil pan gasket is new,so i know its not coming from there. The oil pressure switch and everything around it is bone dry.I thought it may have been coming from the rear main,so when i swapped my clutch out and replaced it,it was still leaking. Are there any sensors back there that are prone to leaking?Maybe some engine plugs?I have to bring it to a car wash and spray some engine cleaner on it and take a closer look.

Weel "below the head and above the oil pan" doesnt make sense.

You say you replaced the oil pan gasket, the sending unit is dry, and the rear main is new.

I have been fixing cars for years as a mechanic, the way I do oil leaks is this. I start with the highest up leak first ( unless I can be sure there is another leak), fix that, if there is another leak I go from there.

Either your valve cover gasket, O/P switch, rear main seal, crank seal, or oil pan gasket is leaking, need to start by elimating what your 100% isnt leaking and go from there

Yeah, the drivers side rear.Everything is dry under the cover.Im gonna clean the motor and just sit under the car with a flashlight and look for the leak, lol.Im thinking maybe one of the hex fittings on the back of the block is leaking or maybe where the dipstick tube goes into the block.

What "hex" fittings?

The dipstick tube doesnt go in the block, it goes into the oil pan

the "hex fitting" is off the oil pump on the passenger side, truthfully i dont know anywhere it really can leak out of hte drivers side, unless its running down from somewhere else.

Yeah,i kinda figured the hex fitting would be a long shot.Nah,def not the oil pressure sensor.Bone dry under there.I havent had a chance to degrease the motor and take look at it.Its not really a huge concern cause i rarely drive the car anymore.Im gonna try to take a look at it this weekend. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

What about the valve pan cover gaskets?
Do you have oil sitting where the spark plugs are located?

...welll, honestly, i don't wanna sound like a jerk, but you didn 't say you checked the oil pan gasket area...just cuz you changed the gaskey doesn't mean its not leaking...could be a bad seal , or some old gasket was still on there...just to make sure, check that too. wish i could help, but i have a 2.2, so i don't know your engine...good luck!
