So racing over the weekend somehow my powersteering fluid drained out of what I believe to be the fittings on the rack. It was not leaking up at the pump on my 2.4, dry as crap.
I was told that overheating of the pump and the fluid would cause the the leak down on the rack. Is this true? The pump is the orginal one that came with my 97.
I guess my question is did the pump its self actually break and I need to replace it?
Thanks.

If the pump went dry more than likely its shot. In which case its beneficial to replace the pump and Rack and flush the lines REALLY well. Without disassembly the rack will never be cleared of debris from the old pump and seals will fail. That would be my recommendation to any customer coming into my shop.
If the pump is not making noise yet I would pull the lines off and flush it VERY well (Talking running a gallon or more of solvent through the pump and lines (Disconnect at the rack) and then you may be after a new rack to fix the leak.

Ive broken the shaft that goes from my pump to my cam towers twice racing, might check that, its an easy check.

I was gonna also look to see if one of the lines just happend to split for some reason, maybe something cut it.

yea man... power steering lines are retarded sometimes. all they need is the tiniest little pin hole and the fluid will be gone real quick. it recently happened to my beretta. we tried rigging up a barb fitting on the high pressure side... nuh uh... she didnt like that. i finally had to break down and replace the entire line-which sucked my ass.
also... you said something about heat.. maybe the turbo is doing something to the lines/rack??? although i dont see how because you were mr heat wrap and jet hot coat at the time of install so that wouldn't make a whole lotta sense to me.
and yes, ultimately the shaft that runs off the hex in the cam breaks for whatever reason quite a bit actually. it is a common issue.

Lol Brad yea I am Mr heat wrap haha. Those lines aren't close to the turbo at all, im getting under the car after work to see whats going on. It's actually not too bad driving without power steering. The thought has ran through my mind about ditching it
