I am trying to fix up my wife's '03 Sunfire a little bit on the cheap.
Her seats are really dirty, especially the back seat. We bought some plants a while back and the dirty water leaked all over her back seat and now it looks terrible. I don't feel like shelling out the money to get it detailed so I was going to do it myself.
My question is, if I take that back seat cushion out and get the upholstry off, which doesn't look that hard, how difficult is it to get back on?
Obviously I will wash in cold water and dry on super low temp so as not to shrink it. But has anyone done this before? The cover looks like it comes off and goes on easy, but a lot of things look easy....
OK so I'm an impaitient SOB. I pulled the seat out and the seat cover is tightened with a string. I untied the string and the cover comes loose pretty easy like I thought. What I didn't realize (and I guess I should have) is that the cover is glued down to the foam cushion.
That is now where I need some of your expertise. I think I can pull the cover off carefully without damaging the seat, but as for washing it what do you guy suggest? I am afraid the washer might ruin the seat cover. If it doesn't, then do I just spray adhesive the foam and put the cover back on or do I need some special glue? I don't want the seat cover just sliding around...
On a warm sunny day, rent, borrow, steal an extractor carpet cleaner with furniture attachments. Put in the water and shampoo, pretreat bad stains and go to it. You will be amazed at the dirt you remove from the seat. No need to remove the covers and risk shrinking / shredding them in the process.
Cheap easy effective.
Stubborn stains often give way to a cleanser like Simple Green.

stock covers will never go back on correctly .. when pulled apart the cover will also pull some of the supporting foam with it. just use simple green or even turle wax interior foam. or try SHOUT. those will work wonders.
rent a carpet cleaner from your local grocery store, or take it to a car was that has one.
if all else fails, blast it with a steam cleaner. Never done that in my cavy, but when i get my mud trucks seats all muddy as hell, i just rail them with the pressure washer, super clean, and vacuum them with the shop vac, they come out nice.
