97 z24 passlock
Wednesday, September 09, 2009 7:32 PM
i have a 97 z24 and i think the passlock theft system is messing up. i was wondering if anyone has disabled or attempted to disable it before. ive read about people using a resistor to trick it into working constantly and ive read about people using bypass modules for remote start systems to disable the system....i.e. http://www.passlock1.com im thinking about trying the remote start bypass module since they are on ebay for like 30 bucks. i was just curious if neone else has tried this or even heard of this????

not entirely sure...but im fairly sure that it is not working correctly. the story is my car has been dying and not starting for about 2 months now. ive tried a whole bunch of things slowly but surely narrowing down the problem. my latest endeavour is that i gave up and took it to an autoshop. haha. they told me that it was the ignition module which i already had tested and it showed that it was good but they said that it was failing when it was hot and i tested it when it was cold sooooo...i told em to go for it. so i shell out 400 bucks for a new gm ignition module to be installed. they do that and as im paying for it the mechanic who worked on it tells me that it was throwing a theft code but he thought that he fixed it by unplugging a wire i had tapped into my fusebox for some glow gauges. so the car drives good for 1 day and starts doin the same stuff again...another reason i think its the passlock is half of the problems i have is with starting it. it will usually start then die almost instantly. supposed passlock cuts off the injectors after a second or two of operation. so that plus the mechanic speaking of a theft code leads me to believe its the passlock system. .....on the other hand ive read that passlock has a "fail enable" mode that should allow the car to run if passlock malfunctions while driving and my car has died many times while driving....but i figure anything computer oriented can malfunction...even a failsafe "fail enable" mode

okay. so i put on the remote bypass module hooking it up as directed and chassis grounding the wire that is supposed to go to the remote start (non-existent in my case) which is supposed to disable the passlock system. this may be premature but i have started it probably about 10 times, let it run for about 30- 40 minutes, and drove it up and down my apartment complex drive a couple times...so far it hasnt had a problem starting and hasnt died. my only concern is with the theft system light. most of the time when i turn the key to the run position before cranking the theft light stays off, but a couple of times the theft light has lit up solid until i crank. so far it starts and runs in both scenarios. i am curious though, since i never paid attention before, what the theft light is supposed to do in normal operation. so if any one knows or wants to check it out for me in their properly working cavvy i would be forever greatful. im just curious as to what the theft light does when you just turn the key to run without starting the car

day 2 and car still starts and runs flawlessy. i drove it to and from work twice, started it about 10 more times, and drove around after work about 2 and a half hours with no problems whatsoever...

i did try it...couldnt ever get the theft system light to go off. i tried the 10 minute deal, tried the same thing waiting 30 minutes, and tried the 10 minute deal 3 times in a row even though the light never turned off.

Your "bypass" module doesn't disable passlock, it's just enabling the resistance code to be store. The Passlock Anti-Theft system involves resistor codes which are generated by resistors located in the ignition key cylinder switch. The GM Passlock system uses what is known as a Hall Effect Sensor to send a resistor code to the Passlock module. The resistor code is activated when the ignition key is physically rotated in the ignition switch. Depending on the model of GM vehicle, the actual resistor code is only introduced to the Passlock system when the ignition switch is turned to the ignition on (run) position or only when the ignition switch is turned to the start (crank) position. If the bypass kit is storing these codes and everything is working, then that leads me to belive you have intermittent problems with your sensor in the cylinder. Or it could also be your key wearing down some, not hitting the tumblers just right, and not the right code being sent.

Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.

tomatoe tomAto. potato potAto. its sending the right code the the cluster...thats all i care about. id still like to know what a normal cavvys theft light does when you turn the key to the run position if anyone would like to help out. im thinking that the sensor in the ignition cylinder sends the wrong code normally when mine is turned to run...thus the theft light in that comes on sometimes in the run position, but the quote unquote bypass module then sends the right code in the crank position.

when u put the key to run the theft light comes on and doesnt go off until the car is on, if the system is working properly of course
