ok the wife was going to work oneday and it just over heated, i changed the waterpump and tried it and it still over heated. i noticed a hose that started to swell up when it over heated tho.
also noticed the thermostat on the engine side was hot and the rad side was cold, i diagnosed that as a bad thermostat and changed it. well now the car still over heats BUT ONLY when driving, it will idle 3/4 hot at idle till i start to drive then it over heats. as soon as i stop and park the car it cools down (not shutting the car off and leaving it run). also noticed that now that hose isn't really swollen but kinda feels like the thermostat housing is still hot on one side and cold on the other?
now i did alot of browsing on here and apparenlty it could be a clogged rad or collapsed hose, curious which hose is the one that is usually the one to collapse on everyone, and what could be a reason of it collapsing or how does the rad get clogged?
also the oil is still free of coolant and the plugs look fine aswell ( so no head gasket problem) also i removed the hose that swells and no coolant came out the metal tube and i could see coolant in the rubber hose tho. how do i bleed the air out of the coolant system. could have air aswell but i have no clue how to get the air out. my honda had a bleeder screw to do that lol.
much appreciated thanks alot.
It might just be air in the line.
There is a bleeder screw on the heater lines, they run under the coilpacks. If you look at your picture above it would be almost directly under the "s" in "swollen hose". Or you can follow the line from the front of the motor. Its directly to the right of the "t" in "Hot" in the pic. you can see it run under the coilpacks and towards the cab.
I would try that and see, also is there enough coolant in the system?
The diagram you show is correct as far as hot and cold. The coolant flows from the head, to the core and radiator, then back into the water pump. so where you say is "cold", really should be. However if it is really cool after the motor is warm it could be a defective thermostat you installed.
try running the heat while driving and see what the temps do (its a good measure when you know the thermostat is defective to keep it from getting too hot). If the heat stays hot and the engine stays cooler, i would say thermostat.
I dont know about a clogged radiator but its possible, how did the coolant look when you pulled the pump and t-stat?

The radiator may need to be "burped". You may have fixed the initial issue but air could have gotten into the radiator and won't allow proper flow. As suggested above you may have to keep heating up the car and then relieving pressure or you can redrain the radiator. I had this issue doing a tune up and couldn't figure it out and then m whole car shuddered and literally burped. Problem solved.
I accidentally the SHIFT LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!
The proper way of using the word seen. It is not I seen it that would be I saw it. He has seen the car is the right way to use the word. English class is Cool. By the way thats my sig
What u need to do allow the engine to cool down, Take youre resivor cap off, Then start up youre car all the motor to idle for 2 mins, Then apply little bit of on the gas peddle, Around 1,000 rpms, Do this for 1 min on 1 min off, Have a some one watch see if the coolant is starting to flow out the resivor, For about 15 mins youre system should be completely free from air in the system. Also U can see if youre temp gauge is dropping as well. Also another question, Has the thermostat and coolant system been flushed?. If that doesnt help youre over heating issues, Might need to replace hoses, Rad
Good Luck.
it really wasn't the abosolute cleanest but i m trying to figure out why its over heating and correct it so i can take it to work and do a flush on it for her.
tomorrow i will try the bleeding of the system and the "buroing of the rad" lol. a question tho i have is will i try the "burping" with the cap on or off? and will i need the heat on or off?
i really appreciate this guys.
thanks alot, lol im jbody eliterate haha.
Yes you can have the heater on, It may help a bit. Ive had a similar issue, When I did my thermostat coolant system flush and refill, All I remember saying oh %^&* whats happened now, Then I remembered my buddy saying I am gonna need to get the air outta the system cause the gauge will read overheating, I burped the system everything has woked very well for me, No problems. Thats the easest advice I could give you, If that doesnt work, You will have to work on replacing coolant system parts.
Good Luck.
sweet stuff, left the heat on and the bleeder open for about 10 mins while running, then did what you said about reving up for a bit for 1 min on and then 1 min off for about 5 times each. temp went down and is a little bit above the cold and i took for a drive and shes still low. thanks alot guys for helping me and the wife out.
only bad part was when i was done i tightened the bleeder and snapped the head off. but meh atleast i broke it tightening it and not half loose right? haha
thanks again.
Good to hear everything worked out for you, Sucks about the bleeder screw or bolt, Is it leaking? I never played around with with that bleeder screw method, Good Job.
