anyone using a braided line for power steering?
Sunday, October 04, 2009 7:43 PM
I have a hole in my high pressure steel power steering line.

I was wondering if anyone has used steel braided lines instead of the solid stock ones. I need to re-route the line, it touches my header right now. I am assuming that the braided line can handle the psi of the power steering. Just not sure of the size i need (diameter of line, and fitting sizes).

What a pain in the ass this job is. I managed to round off the bolt connecting the line to the column on the rack. My last attempt will be to hammer a 10mm socket (it's actually a 12) on the round bolt......I hope this works....

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated, as my car is not driveable now........grrrrrrrrrrr...........stupid header....................

pressure side is 18mm x 1.5 on one side for the rack, 16mm x 1.5 for the pump connection

earl's part numbers:

961955ERL
961956ERL

this is for my 2002 ecotec hybrid tho (used to be a 2.2 LN2 aka 2200 ohv)

i'm not sure if the eco or Z cars came with different racks with different connections.

Thanks for the info "DaFlyinSkwir(LS61) /PJ/ OEM+"

I think the eco might be different, but i still have not taken the stock line out.

but from the pics with those part numbers, they look a little different.

Any idea what the max psi is on a power steering system? more than brake lines?

I think around 200 or 300psi.

when I look up the pressure hose for an eco, it gives me a male end on one side, and a female end on the other.. my rack needs two male ends so its looking like the eco rack is different.

the sizes are apparently the same however.

you can see a picture of the hose on www.rockauto.com

So it turns out that the one end of the line is a unique flare that only GM supplies, so i have to get the original line and bend it back away from my header. Every shop i went to said that they cannot replicate the flare.

Now i have to wait one week to get the part......i hate gm sometimes.......

The bolt going into my rack was a 16mm, the other side was a 12mm. I'm assuming they were metric of course.

So i guess the lesson is: when you are dealing with GM high pressure power steering line, you better go to the stealership, cause you CAN NOT make them yourself.

I cant belive ther is no other way to make that stupid flare....

here's the picture i get for the 2002 OHV rack:

here's the picture i get for the 2004 L61 rack:

the female fitting is where I'm guessing you're having your problem?

Ya the female side, except my line is all steel. just like a brake line, but with the stupid "gm" flare at the end of it.

It's the line on the rack itself. There is a long steel one and a short steel one. I need the long one.

Parts guy said i should call on sat to see if it reached early, but he was jus tryin to get me off the phone. they didn't even offer me express shipping. S.O.B's!

I just had this same problem..down pipe rubbed through my p/s line..I'm assuming it's all one line from what I can feel? Do you have to drop the whole damn subframe to get to the bolt on the driver side? It looks almost impossible to reach otherwise.

No, you do not have to drop your sub.

I got mine off by filing through the line and hammering a 12mm socket on the end. It's a 12mm but i rounded it off with my line wrench, so the 12 fit nice and snug. It is a pain to get to though.

I hope you ordered a line already because mine too 1 week to get here.

yeah I ordered it today, he said he'd have it here on saturday. I also have access to a rack from where i used to work and a chevy tech helpin me out.. I told the guy high pressure line, and he showed me a picture of kinda what pj showed..is that what you ordered? I told him it was a steel line all teh way across the rack and he said that's the only thing it showed.

The one PJ showed me was for an older model. Mine is an 05 and it's a solid steel line with a stupid flare on one side, and a regular flare on the other side, one is a 12mm and the other is a 16mm.

. I'm assuming that all 03+ have the same lines of course. Be careful, the stealership tried to sell me one like that too. I had to go in person and point it out to them on their screen. Good luck!

this is what they sent me, and it's not the right thing. the part that goes to the rack is male and should be female.
