Dome Light / Mirror
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 4:32 AM
I recently bought a '98 Cavalier for my daughter, nice little car but a couple of problems. The dome light and remote mirror don't work, actually the dome light has flickered on a few times, but won't work regularly. Fuses are OK, wiring that I can see is OK, dome light bulb is OK. A friend thought the "malfunction alarm module" might be bad, but does this have anything to do with the mirror?? I tested module using the process I found here, and got the chiming to indicate a problem but the light didn't flash. Any Ideas? JP.

The dome light and remote mirror are non-related issues. The "multifunction alarm module" deals with the seat belt and ignition key warnings, and the theatre lighting functions of the dome light so it could be the culprit of your dome light issue. The electric remote mirrors are not particularly robust and are commonly available (new) in the aftermarket. (I've bought a couple from eBay vendors for under $30 and was satisified.) Used ones are where you find them, but condition varies. Good luck.

Mark, can you tell me where to find this module so I can replace it? The information I had said it is on the right side behind the glovebox but I couldn't see much of anything there that looked a "module". JP.

John, the picture in my '99 service manual shows it bolted vertically to the dash header, above the right side kick panel. You have to remove the "sound insulator" (cover under the dash) from the right side before you can reach it. If my memory serves me (it only rarely does), it's mounted next to the passenger side air bag assembly and reachable once the dash cover is removed. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help Mark, it was a bit hard to get at but I did find it up behind the glove box. I had to go in from the bottom to remove it . I found and repaired 2 breaks in the soldering on the circuit board and now the dome light works and the remote mirrors, apparently there is something electrically connected in there for the mirror as well. Thanks JP.
