My friend as a 1997 Cavalier with the 2.2 motor. His motor has been misfiring for quite some time and we are trying to figure out why?
The motor/car shakes badly at idle (also had poly motor mounts) and when I hooked my HP tuner up to his car, it shows that cylinder #3 is misfiring.
We have swapped the spark plugs, wires, and coil pack for that cylinder. However it still seems to do it. The only other thing I can think of is either injector, ICM, or crank sensor? However would the crank or ICM cause a problem on only one cylinder?
I am starting to think its an injector problem. The car seems to drive ok when moving around, and does not smoke. Any suggestions guys?

Yeah I was going to most likely take care of this. So I guess I just need a compression gauge?

Check compression, but may be weak fuel injector. I just put junk yard specials out of a cavi with 120k into my 96 with 207k and I haven't seen the code yet. ICM can be tested at autozone, have them run it a few times, but usually those are built like a rock.

the wifes 99 sunfire was misfiring pretty bad and i swapped her wires and it fixed the problem.
try swapping 2 wires around and see it it still misfires on the same cylinder, could be a crappy wire.
also does it misfire at idle and go away when you rev it or does it misfire all the time?
*BUMP*
Hey Dennis,
You asked, "also does it misfire at idle and go away when you rev it or does it misfire all the time?"
My VX Holden Commodore (GM L67 3800) has the same symptoms as Mick's Cavalier, rough idle & misfire <2000 RPM that seems to go away when you give her a tickle.
I replaced plugs, leads, Oxy sensors, fuel filter, cooler thermostat Intake Manifold & Supercharger gaskets & I tried a new coil pack... all after the mechanic couldn't fix it.
Mechanic tested compression, vac & replaced injectors (no fix, re-installed old inectors). #3 plug is fuel fouled & after running for around 15 minutes the exhaust starts popping kinda like George Jetson's ride... It's doing my head in man!
Any suggestions bro?
