problem with cav
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 6:27 PM
ok heres the deal my cav wont start, I have replaced alot of stuff (that was bad) coils, coil module, spark plugs and wires, map sensor, tps sensor, alternator, etc. I try to start it and it wants to start ( it cranks but nothing happens) I sprayed some carb spray in it and it started up for about 5 seconds I got to rev the engine a couple times then it died. My plugs are where they are supposed to be so thats not it and Im getting spark I have already checked. Also when I use to start my car when it was working the theft system light would come when attempting to start it and then it would go away. Now when i attempt to start it the theft system light is off. I tried to reset the passlock but it does nothing. I have tried it numerous times and nothing. Anyone have any ideas?? thanks oh btw its a 97 2.2 thanks everyone

Fuel pump perhaps?

When you turn your key ahead you should hear the fuel pump kick in.

remember just because the fuel pump runs doesnt mean its building up enough pressure, i would check fuel pressure next. you saying it ran off carb cleaner makes it sound like the fuel pump. if fuel pressure is to spec let us know and well try to help some more

my 00 2.2 did that when i changed my fuel filter/pump

i had to let pressure build up, i opened my gas cap and pushed the cap in about 4-5 times left it off and let it prime for about 3mins, put the cap back on and it fired right up

see I was thinking fuel pump to usually you can hear a fuel pump kick in real good mine is real quiet, IE: you have to get under the car to actually hear it kick on. Im going to rent a compression test and check it out and Im going to also check out my fuel filter to see if its clogged or anything

rent a fuel pressure gauge and check fuel pressure too you cant diagnose a fuel pump by how loud it is

will do thanks guys

ok this is probably a dumb question but I dont want to waste money on a fuel pressure gauge. but anyways I forgot that I have a fuel pressure gauge inside my car on my pillar from glowshift I havent check what it says but would it work the same way as the fuel prssure gauge your talking about tyler or no are they different and sorry for the question if its dumb im just making sure. Better safe than sorry.

its cool man the 1 on your pillar should work as long as its accurate make sure you compare it to spec i think its around 35-40 psi

haynes sais 41-47 psi key on engine off

ok fuel pressure gauge is reading zero, so I went ahead and got a compression tester and read through my haynes and it really doesnt help with the engine I have. I heard im supposed to remove a spark plug and do them one at a time well how exactly do I do this. I hooked the gauge up to the first cylinder and it read about 50psi and then the others it was to hard to get an accurate reading the needle was everywhere on it. Am I suppose to start the car or is there anything im missing? I have a friend coming over to help me out on it tomorrow. Oh and another thing for some reason my oil pressure gauge when I turn the key over will read 100 psi and never moves it never did that when I had the car up and running.

Ok got the compression test ran the first cyl is hitting 190 2nd is 195 3rd is 190 and 4th one is hitting 130 how does that sound and we got my car to start and keep running when we put gas down the throttle body so that is leading back to the fuel pump not pumping fuel right??

Well, not the best but not the worst either. Those numbers will not prevent you from starting by any means. I'd recheck to be sure and squirt a few shots of oil in before you do the test yet again and see if the numbers jump up after doing so.

Fix your fuel delivery problems, if you haven't got fuel pressure, you've haven't any gas to ignite.

Find out why and fix it. Could be a simple fuse or relay or even a bad connection.

Learn electrical diagnosis basics and go to it.

i would look into the 130 reading once you get the car running again the readings are suppose to be within 10% of eachother, that wouldnt prevent the car from starting though so thats prob the least of ur worries right now. if it runs off carb spray and fuel down the tb i would be thinking fuel pump, diagnose the fuel system next, like i said check fuel pressure is where u want to start with that, if you have 0 on youre gauge on the pillar its prob not even hooked up

check yo fuses?

yeah I checked them but im not sure how to tell if those thick fuses are bad thats in the fuse box in the engine so Im gonna probably pick one up and then im going to check the wiring under my car to see if anythings been chewed etc and Im also going to check my fuel filter to see if its clogged and i havent got to the fuel pressure gauge yet I have had no time.

did you change the pump but not the filter?
