A buddy of mine just picked up an 05 cavalier and the gas gauge is screwed up. The needle is pegged over into the temp gauge. I found one post on search but the only suggestion was changing the cluster. That won't fix the problem if it is something in the fuel system or electrical system. Anyone have any suggestions? I am also aware he can just keep up with the mileage, but he doesn't want to do that. Thanks in advance for the assistance.
Cluster is bad, known problem for these vehicles.
Matter of fact my new cluster just arrived in the mail today, my speedometer is messed up, and my g/f 05 Cavalier temp gauge would go all the way into the speedometer section and the speedometer needle would fight the temp gauge needle, the funniest thing

has anyone been able to fix this issue without replacing the entire cluster? All other gauges work fine.
How else do you think you would fix it, sprinkle some magic dust on it?

could be the gauge sending unit inside the tank too
My pixie dust doesn't work on gauge clusters
Thanks for such useful advise!

No problem, you were advised the cluster was bad and given example or other failures.
I just finished putting mine in two hours ago, got a speedometer working correctly, and my odometter all lights up

When you replaced the cluster did it reset the mileage or were you able to set the mileage correctly?
i believe ours are just plug and play, and since the mileage is stored it would probably recognize the old mileage.
Bill is correct - plug and play. the mileage isn't stored on the cluster itself.

No the mileage is stored in the BCM, it lit right up showing the correct mileage, just plug and play
