Exploding Battery!

Alright so this happened a while ago (2-3months), but I never figured out what caused it, so maybe someone here can. I installed an an inverter in my car so I could run my ps2 in it. I hooked it up and it was working fine. Called my little borther outside to show him how awesome I was and he wanted to play, I let hime pay for maybe 5-10 min, and then decided I should start the car so I don't drain the battery. Turn the key, BANG! Battery exploded. It cracked all the way down the side with battery acid pouring out, and the caps on top shot off and ended up on the other side of the engine. Battery was only 2 years old. Swapped in an old battery I had laying around, never had a problem again. WTF!?

So basically, my battery decided to commit suicide, and this can happen at anytime? I guess its not that common since everyone I asked was just as confused as I was.

Definitely sounds like one of the cells shorted.

Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.

not really over charging. charging with too much amperage could potentially over heat the battery acid and make it explode

I was told if you removed your battery you save P/W ratio

Overcharging was my first guess, but I ruled that out for two reasons. 1) The engine had not even completely started when the battery exploded, I don't think the alternator could have blown the battery that quick. 2) I didn't replace the alternator and this never happened again.

I think Rich and Lanman where probably right with the shorted battery cells. Makes sense that the battery was at fault, since it didn't reoccur. I didn't change the alternator, or any wiring in my car afterwards. I just dropped in another battery after cleaning the acid spill, and presto, no more problems.

i think there is some problem with battery itself...contact the dealor from where you have purchased it...and ask him about the make of battery...it is needed to be checked

My dad had one in a suburban that did the same thing, it blew the caps and side post off, cracked the case of the battery, it was bad and he wasn't even around when it happened. Never figured out what caused it to happen. Good luck it with.
