I have a 2004 Cavalier w/ 2.2 ecotec. I was driving into work today and noticed it was idling high (around 1,500 rpm's) while I had the clutch pushed and and rolling to a stop. After the car would sit for a few seonds it would eventually drop back to a normal idle (around 900 rpm's). Seems to be running fine otherwise. Any ideas on this one guys?
Thanks in advance,
-Jordan
I have that exact problem as well. I find it happens most often once you've been driving at high speens for a while then get stuck sitting in traffic for a while. Let me know if you find out anything.
Sounds like a vacuum line thats starting to crack and leak.
So while the vehicle is still rolling, not at idle, it is 1500rpm and drops to 900 at idle, whats the problem with that, sounds normal
I could see if it was 1500rpm at idle all the time, I dont see any problem
- 2004 Cavalier - 124k, owned since new
No...when I push the clutch in while rolling to a stop, the rpm's will drop to 1500, then remain there for about 30 seconds after the car has been at a complete stop. I removed the idle air control valve and sprayed it with carb cleaner (it did seem to be filthy), then let it dry for a few hours...it hasn't done it since, but it wasn't really doing it all the time before. The car seems to pick and choose when it does this.
Also...it is not after driving at high speeds. I never exceed 50-60 mph on my way to work because of traffic and even that is only for a mile or two at a time.

Any idea what lines to look at?
It may also be important to mention that it has a short ram intake on it. That's been on for a few years though with no problems.
you know its funny i had the same problem, eventually it got worse after driving and then stopping at a light car idles to 1800rpm for around 30sec it sounds as i was always revving the engine. its usually a vacuum leak but after further inspection i had no leaks. anyways it ended up being the "Intake manifold gasket". Hope that helps

I'll keep a close eye on it and see what happens. If I can't fin it, I'll try replacing the intake manifiold gasket.
Back to the Vacuum lines cracking or leaking. Like Jordan mentioned "what lines would I be looking at for leaks and cracks"?
