faint knocking

Hey everyone,

When i start up my car I can hear a faint quiet knocking type sound and i cant figure out what it is.

when i accelerate is just makes the sound faster, you could only hear it if you listen for it, but its very annoying.

My car also is slightly burning oil,

my guess is some ring somewhere wore out and is causing a piston or something to knock

any ideas?

need new engine or is it possible to fix?

also,

how hard are stock engine swaps?

just disconnect mounts and tranny, or is way harder?

thanks!

a piston or possibly a rod would be my guess, don't know if yours is anything like this or not but i read somewhere that sometimes it sounds like someone is hitting the engine with a hammer.

Another thing i just thought of is possibly your valves, we used to have a car that had lifter noises and as soon as you would add a little oil the noise would go away and when it was low again the noise would return. Though i guess lifters would be more of a clicking noise.

your engine might go, thats wha people told me, if the engine is knocking and oils being burnt, its about to go, thing i would do before it gets any worse would be to tear the f*cker down and check it out, be ready to buy a new engine

Yeah True m3ch, that's why i was thinking the engine was probably very close to throwing a rod either way the end result is going to be what you said get a new engine and move on.

how hard are lifters to change?

I have a a little experience working on cars, im not that good but i managed a cam swap on my old 2.4 sunfire.

is it significantly harder?

thanks for the help!

What engine?

Could be a lifter sticking.... could be a rod bearing going, could be a writs pin, could be piston slap, clould be a pully.... cant really tell withought being there..

Check this thread: http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=11&i=149507&t=149507

I have an engine knock sound when the engine is hot, the sound goes away when I change the oil, when I press the gas and when I turn the steering wheel, I've discussed this issue with some people and we think it's caused by the valve lifters. There's a link to a file in the thread in which you can hear the noise, maybe you want to compare it with your sound and tell us what you think.

Rodolfo, i know exactly what sound your talking about we had an old Chrysler lebaron that had that problem. Anytime it was low on oil it would make the noise we added oil and it went away, however along with that in our case anyway the engine burned oil you could tell because the tips of the exhaust were soaked with what appeared to be burned off oil.

humm.. My car doesn't seem to be burning oil, it's using Esso 10w40 and it has around 3000 km since the last oil/filter change and the oil level is still full.. What ended up being the cause of the sound in your Chrysler?

valve lifters, though i think your on to something there because i'm pretty sure not all cars with lifter noises burn oil. In our case i think the oil burning was another issue entirely, but as far as the lifters went the sound was generally only at idle and as soon as we accelerated the noise went away.

Yeah that's how it works.. sound goes away when accelerating, I've told a several times that it's a problem of the valve lifters and I really hope that's the problem and not something worse cause this is not a good time for me for starting an engine overhaul

Rodolfo, from what i understand about the valve lifting as long as you know what takes care of the noise ie makes it go away you can just about live with it forever. Like if you know it only makes the noise when it's low on oil and as soon as you add oil or whatever it goes away you can live with it and not do any major damage to the engine. Until you have the cash to fix it.
