Trunk Latch

who on here has ever had to replace the trunk latch on their cars, i'm to the point where i almost have to slam the trunk to get the latch to engage and don't want to bust the trunk lid . How involved a Job is it.

have you tried lubeing the latch? i had the same problem with my '98 sunfire, i sprayed some lube on the latch mechanisim and it helped a lot. i guess they get dirty easy since it is on the rear of the car and all the dirt that gets flying around gums it up. you can also look at the rubber bumps, see if they have unscrewed themselves and are holding the trunk up more then it should be, it should be level with the fenders.

Thanks Mike, i'll look into that i know awhile back i had to put my car in the body shop and they wound up replacing the back bumper and some other stuff and when they redid it they didn't align the trunk right and now when i close it i get a scraping sound on one side. But i'll definitely look into the lube, that actually sounds like the easier fix anyway.

Check that you haven't bent the metal loop on the bottom, where the latch closes. I've seen people that continue to slam their lids, and end up bending the loop to the point that it won't close at all.

I'm probably pretty close, because this last time it took at least a good 6 times before i finally got the trunk closed. for now i'm just bypassing the trunk altogether, and just using the back seat and floor as much as i can when i have a lot of stuff. Only prob is if i need to haul stuff the only way to get the back seats down is to go through the trunk.

I had to replace the hook on the body, eventually it will break off. It happened to me on the highway and luckily the hook and its plate were still together and kept the trunk from flying up, I used a peice of 6mm iron and rivited a new mounting plate in place. It's a common GM problem and the majority of Sunfires/Cavs here in Newfoundland have this problem. Doors are not meant to be slamned shut!
