head removal

I'm new here, and love this forum. I'm building a 99 cavalier dirt track car with my son, I'm pulling the head and need to know if I just take it off , and put it back on when I get it back. what I mean is I'm not used to working on these engines, need to know if I should put a cylinder at tdc, I'm worried about timing with the valves and such, hope this makes since.

please disregard that.

with any interferance motor you are going to want to make sure you take extra car when removing the head. as soon as the tensioner from the timing chain is relased the valves will slam to a rested position. with a pistoin at TDC you will smack a valve and most likely break aseat or crack the valve it self. your best be is to pick up a haynes manual. It will give you detailed insctrutions on removing the head (with pics). but if your feeling balsy and dont care. just set the pistons to half stroke all the way across. mark your cam gears to your chain (use white out) then mark you crank gear to your chain. then relase tension on your cam gears remove the bolts and studs and vuala.

well gee, i guess it's a good thing then that

1. the ohv is a non interference engine

2.you cant get to the chain tensioner without taking off the timing cover.

3. you don't need to even take the timing cover off, hell you don't even have to look at it to pull the head.

Ummm, how is a valve closing going to cause it to hit a piston? Also, you're supposed to loosen the tension on the rocker arms before you remove the head. This will put the valves on the seats before the head is removed.

To the original poster, Removing a head on this engine is basically the same as any OHV engine. When reassembling though, make sure the head and block surfaces are clean before you put the new gasket on. Also, you should replace the head bolts as it is recommended they are only used one time. They are torque to yield bolts.
