Engine ticking noise and what sounds like a mis-fire out the exhaust when i let off the throttle.

Had a similar sound shortly ago and had the timing chain, gears, tensioner and guides replaced. Guides were snapped in half. After replacement it made it sound good for a short while, but that was less than 2000 miles ago.
If i turn the wheel and put a little load on the engine, the sound will stop as well. My mechanic is stumped, and i don't want to go replacing parts trying to figure out what's wrong.
Ideas on what i need to fix this? I'm a college student and I need a car to drive to school everyday (even during the summer now).
Thanks!
Hello new engine!!! Hope you didn't waste the MaxLife on it.
Why do you say new engine? What do you think is broke?
This is gonna hurt the wallet. And yes it has maxlife in it currently.
Man, you need to pull that oil pan off asap.Your oil looks like mine did when i found out my #3 rod bearing got chewed up,and from the way your engine sounds, you got a serious malfunction on the lower end.
that thing is toast. and change your mechanic. something is seriously wrong if he is stumped by oil like that or an engine that sounds like that.

All stock...........lol.
Thrown rod bearing and the metal in your oil is little chinks of the bearing and maybee your rod that are being shaved away...
X2 on getting a new mechanic..... he should have known what it was the second he started it.
You either need a new engine or a serious rebuild..... I would go new engine..
I didn't figure it was the bearing since I've seen driving on it for probably 6k miles at least while getting that stuff in my oil. Also, it did quiet it down when he changed the timing chain but only for a few hundred miles, then it came back and sounds worse than before. Sounds like maybe I'm on borrowed time or I've just been lucky so far.
Thanks for the input. How much $$$ am i looking at for a new engine/full rebuild at a normal mechanic? No more backyard garage mechanic for me.
Might just be time for a new car and sell this one, assuming i could still get anything for this one? 110k miles and no major issues except for this engine bit.

I think your time has run out. Whenever oil looks like that, something catastrophic has happened. Or is about to. Price out a rebuild from a shop (other than the one you were going too) and check out carpart.com for a used engine. I wouldn't drive it. If you find out it's cheaper for a rebuild, keep driving it and throw a rod out of the block, you HAVE to get a new engine.
It doesn't sound like the infamous rod knock. It sounds more timing chain than anything. Mr. backyard mechanic might have made a mistake...
I was thinking it sounded a little high pitch for a rod knock..... but I fiqured it was just the way the camera was picking it up because thats EXACTLY how my old 2.4 sounded when it spun a rod bearing...... just a little lower pitch...
plus I dont see a bad timing chain causing that much metal in the oil..
Yes I've had this happen before (long story) But we had a friend replace the engine with another 2.4 with 70K and threw a rebuilt tranny in there (it was my dads car at the time and we didnt have a cherry picker) and it cost $2,000 dollars....
IF you have it done buy a shop your looking at $1500 minimum.... but you could prob do it yourself with a junkyard engine for $800 or less.

Agree. Also OP said when load it is not as loud. That is usually the tensioner getting more oil pressure. I have seen a 2.4 that had lots of metal in the oil, and it was from the timing chain housing. Chain was rubbing on the inside of the housing.
FU Tuning
yea, sounds like the timing chain rattling against the timing cover. the metal in the oil is probably from the chain rubbing. your guy @!#$ something up, and all those loose timing cover bolts dont make him look any better... i'd pop the timing cover off and take a look at what's going on. see if everything looks new or not, or if anything is shot. i re-used my old tensioner first time i tore into the housing(the wrong one came with the set), and the brand new chain was rattling against the cover bad at idle. @!#$ it up for sure. you may need to eat a whole new timing set for it to be perfect. i would start there though. if you can't do it yourself then have a decent mechanic do the work.
Guess I should give an update now that this has been brought back to life.
The timing chain was the reason. The tensioner had to be swapped out twice, due to the metal in the oil clogging up the 1st replacement. I ended up band clamping several strong magnets around my oil filter and keeping the rpm down (to keep the bypass closed) in order to get all the metal out.
Still not sure if that's the only reason, but after two oil changes with the magnets on, the metal was gone. Been driving it since and plan to keep driving it for a while yet.
