Do i have to loosen the engine mount bolts before i raise the oil pan with the jack?
So I just slowly jack up the oil pan and I should then raise the engine to give me room to loosen the belt tensioner?
Sorry about the cross post. Wasn't sure where to put this as it make be a dump question.
I think i'm trying to loosen the wrong pulley on the belt tensioner.
I found a pic of a color coded pulley system for this engine.

Can I just use a broom stick to push down on the tension pulley to loosen the belt to get it off the alternator. I read a thread stating this is the only way of really doing it for a 99 cavalier.
Then I read that I must use the acutal wrench socket 1/2" drive without the socket to loosen the pulley. Which means i was originally going after the wrong pulley on the tensioner right?
see where the arrow is pointing? you bu ta 3/8 drive reachet in there and rotate it down. thats it. again, NEVER jack on an oil pan.

I really appreciate your help. What damage could i have done by jacking up the oil pan 2 inches, I had the front wheels of the ground with the car on jack stands. I then jacked up the car 2 inches then lowered it, realizing it was just lifting the whole front of the car and not just the motor.
Was a minor or major mistake?

kinda like putting a brick on an EGG.. eventually gravity will take its toll.
I cut off the end of a 3/8" extension and welded it to a piece of flat bar. Not enough clearance for a 3/8" ratchet on my '99. In case anyone is wondering it did change in '98 making it a b!tch to get to the tensioner.
I got it, i just used a bar, but it was difficult getting the belt back on.
I did notice a third small hose that comes out of the top of the coolant tank and goes no where. I didn't notice it till i was checking everything. Is that for overflow?
