Throttle sticking??
Sunday, February 14, 2010 9:59 PM
I had this issue a few years back but it seemed to subside... now the problem is back.

The throttle on my 02 sunfire GT is getting stuck. It seems to only happen when it's about -10 - -15 Celsius. Always happens when the engine is at normal operating temp.

The pedal gets a "stuck" feeling almost like it's icing up. There is no way that the floor mat is catching the pedal as it happens with and without the floor matt in the vehicle.

The only way I can get it to unstick is stomp on the gas pedal and free it up or pull over and pop the hood and manually rev the engine at the throttle body.

Any Ideas?

Sounds like an issue I am having on my 01 cavalier, I believe my issue is my throttle is kinked. Thats what I would look into.

Good Luck.

The throttle cable itself?

to me it doesn't make sense why it only does it in certain conditions.. I've NEVER had this issue in the summer

What happens is the throttle cable is a wire line fed through, A plastic coat covering, When the coating gets bent or brake in it, causes the wire cable to kink, In which throttle sticks, Also cold weather could cause the TPS in the throttle body to stick from ice chilled air. I would recommend using some throttle body cleaner, see if that helps. I know my throttle cable is needing to be replaced.

Good Luck.

would make sense if it was a toyota cav hahahahaha...

so I took everything apart and all appears normal....

Coming home tonight the throttle sticks again at 85km/h... fun stuff on the freeway... couldn't get the pedal to pull back... i coudl go faster but it was almost like I was in cruise control....

Of course at this point I check to see if my cruise is engage and it isn't... for the hell of it I flick it on...

As soon as I flick on cruise the pedal releases.

Does this make any sense to anyone??? I'm totally lost now...

could be the cruise control mechanisim that holds the throttle. Sounds like it may have ice in it. Can you dis connect it and drive the car to see if it was the cause?

hmmm my throttle body is sparkling clean now... this is the second time in a year that I've done a complete cleaning of it....

Not sure why ice would be building up anywhere.... at home my cars parked in a garage that doesn't get below 0 and at work the car sits in a heated underground parking lot...

the only time it sees snow/water is driving to and from home and work....

I'm going to look into disconnecting the Cruise control...

It only seems to happen in late winter/early spring
