In my 2000 5spd with Getrag:
Long day, tried to pull tranny to do clutch. Ended up running out of time and having to put it back together. My manual had said to use "synchromesh" and was instructed to add 3 quarts. I'm reading online it may only have needed 1.8Q.
Should I drain it and replace $35 in fluid and replace it with a good ATF Dex III?
What is the fluid capacity? It took all 3 quarts and didn't flinch.
Thanks!
The capacity is 1.8qrts. There is a TSB for 2.7 qrts. I put in 3qrts at one time as I was running numerous tests on a known rattle AGES ago, but decides on 2 qrts and that was simply because of less weight.
Use B&M Synthetic ATF (grey bottle)

You should be using ATF, not sycrohmesh.
I do 2 bottles. I really like Hurst synthic over B&M

I I got access to alldata last night and did see the 1.8/2qt capacity and dex 3 atf. Ill get the best one they have at advance auto today when I get a ride. My owners manual listed syncromesh, but I drained clean pink atf from it. This has been a pia. I got the car on stands at home and it is 20*F out and windy as all @!#$. Need the car for work tomorrow though so I have no choice.
Thanks for the input guys, always found help round here when I needed it. Haven't been around in ages though since I moved over to second gen z24s. I am building a 3400 that will go in this summer that is cammed with extensive top end work. Shooting for 240 whp but may fall shy if I can't find a 5spd to swap, but sure beats my ln2.
mine always takes 1.8 then starts coming out of the fill hole. i see a lot of people filling it from the red cap on the top. isnt that just a vent and you are supposed to fill it from the hole in the side until it flows out?
and im going from mobil 1 ATF, to Syncromesh. I know it says ATF in the manual but a lot of people I talked to said the synchromesh will work great regardless.

The TSB says to use the red fill cap so you can overfill the transmission.
Can someone post the wording from the TSB?

what i am reading on that link is that you use the plug next to the red vent cap...
6. Remove the fill plug located on the top/middle of transmission on the driver side, near the red vent cap. If you use the check level plug on the side of the transmission, you will not be able to overfill the transmission.
7. Fill the transmission with 2.4L (2.6 qts) of Saturn Manual Transmission Lubricant P/N 21018899.
DO NOT USE THE RED VENT CAP TO FILL.
8. Re-install the fill plug. Tighten
Tighten the fill plug to 38 N·m(28 lb ft).
but i for one have never had the grinding or noise and id say i squeeze 1.9-2.0 qt into it through the fill hole since i squeeze all i can as its running out and then cap it asap. only problem i had was at about 90K miles... bad 5th gear synchro and bad 2nd gear, but that was my fault from drag racing.
I use the red vent cap hole to fill. No problems, easy to use.
I was told to add fluid that way until it starts to come out level hole on back side of tranny. I never use that, just put 2 qts in and go.

I really recommend to NOT use the vent (red cap) to fill. Use the plug right next to it. By using the vent cap, you're not damaging anything, but go to quick in pouring your fluid and it will spill. If you use the vent to fill, go very, very slow.

I have practice at using the vent cap.

Maybe I did use the plug next to it. Actually I think I did. I just changed my fluid a month or so ago. You'd think I'd remember. Sorry for the misinformation.
