I just put my J back on the road after being in storage for just about 2 years... Overall got it running good but I've noticed some squeaks.
It started just under breaking, I would assume this would be caused from any rust build up on the rotors over the last two years.. It seems to be more than that though... It continues to make the squeak (like nails on chalkboard squeak) upon initial acceleration from a stop, for about a second or two.. also did it upon taking a turn into a parking lot.. any ideas?
I want to check my ball joints, I replaced them when I swapped engines not long before taking it off the road... and the 'aftermarket' ball joints, the booty seems to pop up easily, im concerned it could have popped off and isn't as packed with grease or something.. would this cause squeaks? I just don't want something to bind up. (Im at work so can't check quite yet).
Maybe just because my breaks are still the OEM original pads and have sat for 2 years. I just thought it was weird that it still squeaked upon acceleration. Sticky caliper maybe? A way to test this?
Looking for any ideas thrown around. Like I said, just don't want to risk having a joint bind up.

Update:
Ball joint boots look good.
Squeaks on breaking, initial acceleration, and while turning to right (have not heard it squeak while turning to left). I would consider wheel bearings but I dont hear any humming/griding while driving or turning which I heard is a sign.. do they squeak on their way out too?

i think ive thrown all 4 wheel bearings since ive bought mine...
when the front ones went, i heard a quiet clicking that over time got violently loud... the clicking was in time with the speed the cv axle was turning, and i'd hear it on the opposite side of the vehicle. it would go away when i turned in the direction of the bearing, and not go away nor change when i turned away from the bad bearing....
the rears on the other hand did not make any noise... the pass side was taken out when i was ran off the road by a drunk driver a few years back, the driver side rear never made noise but you could lift the car and there was way too much play with the wheel
I am deff not hearing a clicking.. at most the squeak chirps at times, it does seem to make a faint squeak while driving as well, it's mostly noticeable when I drive next to something (on the pass side) so that the sound echoes off... its very quiet while driving, but the sound goes in and out, it's not a steady squeak as if it was squealing. Sorry it's hard to describe a noise.
It is deff coming from the right side. I hear it through the passenger side window. As I said, it increases in noise when turned to the right (seemingly at any speed, however it's harder to crank the wheel in any direction once moving at a steady speed). It also gets just as loud when coming to a stop. It seems to be quieter that faster I am going.
I am really stumped by this. I just don't want something to bind up and cause the car to need a tow.
After reading this thread (http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=11&i=149220&t=148882#149220) it sounds like it's possible that it is my break pads.
I was having the exact same problem for a very long time. No matter how many times I had my brakes changed this would happen. Finally my car started to pulse when I hit the brakes. I changed the rotors and the squeak is gone. I would try new brakes first, Probably need a change anyway, and then new rotors.
I jacked it up today to check the wheel bearing for play & nothing, tight as can be, spun the wheel, and there was the squeak. Looks like the pad indicator thing is rubbing the rotor.. new pads & maybe new rotors this weekend. Hope it fixes it
if the indicator is hitting the rotor, then i would replace it too. they arent that bad.
IIRC the indicator is usually only on one pad, and usually the outside pad. it would make since that it is making noise when braking, and when turning, i bet the rotor angles ever so slightly that the indicator hits then too. but if it is hitting while accelorating, then i would say def time to change.
Its constantly rubbing, which explains why it rubs during acceleration. Its just quieter at higher speeds. The car was jacked up and when I spun the front wheel, it was like fingernails on a chalkboard, lol. Then I could see where the indicator was against the rotor. As long as that caliper isn't sticking at all, I should be fine with a new set of pads and rotors.
get ceramic pads... cheaper, less brake dust, and they last longer...
I'll probably get flamed for this but here it goes. When I bought Rotors I got the Valucraft cheapos from AutoZone. There is nothing wrong with them and they are of a substantially good build. Just throwing that out there.
mmmm cross drilled and slotted... =)
Was planning on getting ceramic pads, no way I would be putting metallics on there, lol. Because I need to get this done and don't have time to wait for an order of slotted, Im just going to pick up some OEM replacement rotors from Pep Boys. I won't be racing the car (yet) so the OEM ones will be sufficient.
For anyone interested, this is why they were squeaking:
Break pads shouldnt do this:
Before:
After:
Looks good Jess. You shoulda painted the knuckle and stuff while you have it kinda apart.
Thanks... It's getting slotted rotors in time, so when I do those I plan on makin it look a little prettier under there. For now, I just needed some good working brakes, lol.
Damn dude. Those were shot.
hooooooooooooooooolllyyyyyyyyyyyy Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
wow... i bet your brake pedal is ALOT stiffer now....
how does the car run now?

Haha yeahhhh, they were pretty bad. lol.
Well today I have to check out my wheel sensors, Im throwing an ABS light for some reason... but other than that, shes quiet as can be and stopping feels a lil tighter. Oddly enough the breaks didn't feel thaaaat bad before other than squeaking, lol.
every time i change pads/rotors the pedal gets a lot stiffer and less travel to stop the car... after break in the pedal usually returns to normal...

Yes feels that way.
After seeing the pads just crumble apart upon removal, and one pad completely missing half of the surface contact where I showed in picture... im surprised it stopped as good as it did, lol.
ABS light fixed too... one of the plugs just popped out, lol.
