Hey, i have a 2000 chevy Cav z24 with the 2.4L and whats the best way the change the fluid and filter????
Drop the pan, remove filter, replace filter, add fluid.
Purchase a Hayne's/Chilton's manual. They are fairly accurate.
Easiest way to do it is to take it to a shop (or a stealership, whichever you prefer) and have them do a trans flush. IIRC they are about 75$, and it's much more effective than just draining majority of fluid and replacing it.
Before you do so, how many miles are on the car? Automatic transmissions after about 100K tend to not like flushes (or any change in the oil) and like to blow up. Just an FYI.
is that true......i have 145000 miles on the car. but alot of trans shops are saying that the 4t40 tran is a sealed transmission, is that true?
Technically speaking, the 4T40E does NOT need fluid changes (per GM), given the vehicle is not abused.
Either way, if you like your transmission, I would NOT get the fluid changed at that high of mileage. The trans becomes dependent on the old fluid (for what-ever reason).
I would like to shed a little of my experience, I don't recommend the transmission flush, Just get the fluids and filter changed, Youre car should be good to go. I got a flush done on one of my other cars 2 months I had transmission started slipping. Sure wasn't a good move to do. I did a transmission fluid and filter change on my 01 cavalier at 112,000 km's its still working awsome. I am due for another transmission fluid and filter soon. I will be doing the same, No flush.

i know that, after talking to alot of people at shops, they all say that the 4t4o can not be worked on....filter changed, etc....
Look there are 12 bolts holding the trans fluid pan.There is a filter in there.You can reuse the trans pan gasket as long as its reusable.You will be surprised at how dirty the fluid is and metal shavings on the magnet.If you want I can email you a diagram of the 4T40E transmission or do a search online.Can not be worked on?BS BS BS.You can take the hole thing apart.

I had the fluid and filter changed in my 4t40 at around 80,000 miles. I had Mobil 1 synthetic fluid put in it. Im at 130,000 now and at around 150,000 im going to change the fluid and filter again.
A few tips...
The pan gasket is meant to be reuseable, so if its in good shape do so.
Trans flushes (like they sell at oil change places) are a VERY bad idea in general. I worked at a place that rebuilt Allison transmissions for 7 1/2 years, so Ive had some auto trans experience. They tend to break loose any deposits in the transmission and force them into small places inside the trans. This leads to all kinds of problems. Most commonly clogging shift solenoids or the filter, which starves the trans of oil and burns it up.
If you started at 15,000 miles and repeated every 15,000 then you might be ok. Best advise is just to avoid them. Also the flush doesnt change the filter.

whats the best kind of fluid i could use in my tran.(keep in mine it has 143000miles). I was thinking about synthetic but i dont know...
I used mobil 1 synthetic in my 99 Sunfire. My 2004 LS Sport and my gfs 99 Malibu both have mobil1 synthetic in them. Before committing to it Id get a look at the inside of the trans when you or your mechanic drops the pan to change the filter. If the pan isnt full of junk and the inside of the trans is clean go for it.
As a side note...we put the mobil1 synthetic fluid in the trans of my gfs old 91 Escort GT, and it had 274,000 miles on it. 5 years later her uncle is still driving the car and it hasnt had any trans problems.
