Hey guys! Yesterday my 99 Cavalier started to overheat and the check guages light came on. Now I owe the car a long overdue oil change which I'll do later on today, and was planning on giving it a radiator flush to see if this helps. Now, is there anything else you guys recommend I do to the car? Should just the flush help with the overheating or can it be a different problem. Please advise!
Well, we did a flush, treatment, and another radiator flush yesterday. What the car does now is that it will overheat, the check gages light turns on, then the light goes off as the needle lowers slightly. It's not near the "H", but it's still more on the right side nearing "H" than in the middle.
What other options shall I explore?
That's the spot it stays at once it starts going back down after it briefly overheats. The "check gages" light is not on at this point. Normally the needle stays in the middle, not so much on the right side like this.
What else can I do? My bf is the one helping me out with this and I'd really hate to have to take it into a shop and get ripped off and have to pay tons of cash.
I agree with Rich, you more than likely have an air bubble that needs to be bled out, it would be a good time install a new radiator cap and thermostat if you didn't already.
My car does the same thing. Nothing to really worry about just make sure it doest get to the red. I think it has something to do with the fans not coming on fast enough. If youre driving does it happen cause mine only does it when its sitting.
Check you're coolant level and make sure the fan is coming on at idle. Also compare the temp on the upper and lower rad hoses. Make sure the system is bled out well. If the lower hose is cold at operating temp you may need a head gasket and head checked. I'm guessing its a 2200?

Well, I decided to take it to a mechanic today...it kept overheating over the weekend. Turns out it needs a new radiator..apparently it was majorly clogged and didn't circulate the water anymore...bastards are charging me a little over $300 for it.
Ugh...

$300 for a new rad w/ labor. That isn't bad.
